The New York Yankees are set to begin their best-of-three wild card series against Cleveland on Tuesday night. On paper, it has the makings of a special pitching matchup. Cleveland is starting Shane Bieber while the Yankees are countering with ace Gerrit Cole. Both had ERA+ above 150 during the regular season, with Bieber's 281 making him likely to take home AL Cy Young honors.
New York's starting catcher will be Kyle Higashioka and not Gary Sanchez. Higashioka has served as Cole's personal catcher over his last four starts, dating back to early September, and the two have manufactured some high-quality results. In those four outings, the Cole-Higashioka battery has a 1.00 ERA and a .147 opponents average; for comparison's sake, Cole had a 3.91 ERA and a .224 average against in six outings with Sanchez.
