The New York Yankees slugged their way to a blowout win over Cleveland ace Shane Bieber in Game 1 of their American League Wild Card Series. Now Cleveland, the No. 4 seed in the AL bracket, needs two wins in a row to keep its season alive. New York will try to advance to the ALDS on Wednesday night.
For Wednesday's Game 2, right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (3-3, 3.56 ERA) will take the mound for the Yankees. Tanaka is notable for his postseason dominance. Hhe owns a 5-3 playoff record with a 1.76 ERA and 0.78 WHIP. During those eight postseason starts, the veteran has held opponents to a .157 batting average. In Game 3 of the 2017 ALDS, Tanaka threw seven shutout innings against Cleveland, which kicked off three straight wins to help New York overcome a 2-0 series deficit. Right-hander Carlos Carrasco (3-4, 2.91 ERA) will take the mound in Game 2 for Cleveland. Carrasco was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in 2019, but he recovered and was cleared for a return to the mound last season.
