The Dallas Stars have forced a Game 6 in the Stanley Cup Final after defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 (box score) in double overtime of Game 5. The veteran Corey Perry was the hero of the evening, taking advantage of a scramble in front of goal and getting the puck just past Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy. Dallas is now down 3-2 in the series and will get a chance to knot things up on Monday.
Despite beginning less than 24 hours after the last game of the series -- which also went to overtime, Game 5 was a far cry from its predecessor in terms of style from both teams. Friday brought goals aplenty for Dallas and Tampa Bay, while Saturday brought a much more cagey affair. Perhaps it was the lack of rest for each group of forwards, or each side's defensive group buckling down due to the stakes at hand.
Perry opened up the scoring at the end of the first period. The Lightning's top line did what it does best and scored in the second period with a beautiful set up to even things up. Brayden Point then found Mikhail Sergachev who fired an absolute beauty of a shot to take the lead early in the third, and it looked like the Lightning were firing on all cylinders, and on their way to winning the Cup. Instead of wilting under the pressure, the Stars perked up and started fighting back with the desperation of a team on the brink. This energy led to Joe Pavelski to score Dallas' second goal of the game, tying things up and making him the leading American-born postseason scorer in Stanley Cup playoff history.
Once again the teams were sent into overtime and, once again, the Lightning looked poised to force their way to victory. However, Stars goalie Anton Khudobin picked an excellent time to morph into a brick wall was vital to stopping anything that Tampa Bay threw his way. He also had some help on that front as Stars players were sacrificing their bodies left and right to provide extra barriers in stopping shots. It was a strategy so effective that Dallas finished the first overtime period with no shots on goal without any consequences.
The second overtime saw a much more aggressive Stars team come out and fire shots at the Lightning in ways that they hadn't done all series. Tampa kept pace, as they are wont to do, but unlike Friday, it was Dallas who was able to get the game winner. With over 23 minutes of hockey wearing down his 35-year-old legs, Perry was able to scramble for the puck after a shot from John Klingberg rebounded off Vasilevskiy and force a Game 6.
Of course, while Monday brings a chance for the Stars to tie this series, it also brings another opportunity for the Lightning to clinch the Stanley Cup. A team that is this close to finally achieving glory after years of heartbreak and disappointment won't go down that easy, especially with an extra day to think about what just happened. Puck drop for Game 6 is set for Monday night at 8 p.m. ET in Edmonton.
