Will The Score To Stick To Chicago To Find A New Star? - Barrett Sports Media

We talk about what the best coaching jobs in sports are all the time. Is USC still a Top 10 job? Is the Lakers job better than the Celtics? Is the best head coaching job in the NFL the one with the best quarterback? You know the drill.

Just like my opinion that the Florida job will always be a Top 5 gig in college football, hosting afternoon drive at 670 The Score in Chicago will always be one of the best jobs in sports radio. After Dan McNeil was let go by the company last week for his comment about Maria Taylor, the opening became arguably one of the most sought after positions we’ve seen in sports radio in quite some time.

Not only do you get the luxury of hosting at one of the most successful stations in market number three, but you also get to work for one of the best PD’s in the business in Mitch Rosen, and alongside Danny Parkins who has elevated himself to become one of the best hosts in the city. Everything you need to succeed as a talent is in the place with The Score’s drive time opening.

There’s no doubt Rosen’s email inbox has been flooded with resumes and reels from vying hosts all across the country. But with the news that The Score will start by experimenting with both Matt Spiegel and Leila Rahimi co-hosting with Parkins until October 2nd, it’s starting to look like the station wants its next host to have strong Chicago ties.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that thinking. In fact, Spiegel and Parkins was one of my favorite shows in the country before it ended in 2018. Pairing the two back together would be as close to a seamless transition as you could find, seeing as the two always picked up right where they left off on the air. Admittedly, I’ve never heard Rahimi on the air, but with her impressive resume, I have no doubt she and Parkins could continue to bring strong ratings to The Score too.

Either hire could work well, but I can’t help but wonder what The Score’s options might be if they did a nation-wide talent search. For instance, maybe Carrington Harrison would leave 610 Sports in Kansas City and reunite with his old co-host Parkins to recreate the magic from their days together in Kansas City. Maybe another young talent and former college buddy like Andrew Fillipponi at 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh could reconnect with Parkins and form a duo that spends years together atop Chicago’s ratings.

Regardless it’s interesting to gauge how different PD’s approach their talent searches. Some prefer looking locally, others like to look nationally for their next host.

“It all depends on the circumstances,” said Brad Carson, program director at 92.9 ESPN in Memphis. “For us, we started with a national host in Gary Parrish, who happened to live in Memphis. It was the best of both of those worlds. I think when stations, whether it’s The Score or 92.9 FM ESPN Memphis, are looking to hire a host for a show or replace a show, local is the most important thing about a radio station. It just is. It’s why music radio is having a harder time right now because sports radio can hyper localize.”

Dave Tepper of Altitude Sports in Denver has done both national and local searches in the past. He may not prefer one to another, but being a guy that’s thrived in multiple markets, he leans on his own experience that says a well-prepared and talented host can thrive in any market.

“The preference is to search high and low,” Tepper said. “You have to look under your nose to across the country for the right person. I believe if you’re a hard enough worker, somebody can go into a market and they can prep their way into credibility. I also think that sometimes, whether you only want to hire a local person, you need to make sure that person has an approach that aligns with yours. Here in Denver we had some of those discussions because there are some local people who have been ingrained in a style that we felt might not be the best fit here.”

The great news for Chicago sports radio listeners is that The Score is somewhat like a great owner, such as Jerry Buss or The Rooney Family, in the sense you feel they have the right pulse to make a home run hire. If the hire has local ties, the adjustment period for the audience is likely to be much shorter than hiring an outsider. Plus, entering a local host in the midst of a Cubs playoff run, a Bears season that’s off to a 2-0 start and a Bulls head coaching hire that made an instant splash, makes a lot of sense. Putting someone with Parkins that knows the landscape of the teams in the city should bode well for future ratings.

It can’t be stressed enough that the Score’s opening is one of the most high-profile jobs we’ve seen in the past several years.  Maybe the best hire is right under the noses of The Score in their own city. But if the station chooses to look nationally, few hosts would say no to a brand as powerful as 670 The Score.
