No. 6 LSU is in trouble at home in its first game in the quest to repeat as national champions. The Tigers trail Mississippi State 17-14 after 30 minutes of play in a game where they have been thoroughly outplayed by the Mike Leach air raid offense.
Myles Brennan, in his first game as the starter for the Tigers, is just 9-of-18 passing for 119 yards and one touchdown -- a prayer that tight end Arik Gilbert came down with in the end zone in the second quarter. The Tigers have managed just 32 sack-adjusted rushing yards with Tyrion Davis-Price leading the way with just 15.
The Bulldogs offense, on the other hand, has been humming. Quarterback KJ Costello has 292 yards and two touchdowns -- a 31-yarder to Tyrell Shavers and 43-yarder to Osirus Mitchell. Costello, who transferred to Mississippi State from Stanford during the offseason, has led drives of 66, 55, 75 and 75 yards in a half in which the Bulldogs held the ball for 19:40.
