For the first time in this Stanley Cup Final, the Tampa Bay Lightning are coming in to a game with a series advantage. After beating Dallas 5-2 on Wednesday, they enter Game 4 with a 2-1 lead.
The Lightning had a storyline that transcended the shellacking they dealt their opponents: the return of captain Steven Stamkos. The 30-year-old Canadian had surgery in early March for a core muscle injury that was aggravated at least once over the summer -- though details are reportedly scarce on what happened then. He made his return to the ice for the first time in 211 days during Game 3 and was even able to score a goal in the first period, which caused the Lightning bench to erupt in jubilation.
Unfortunately, the feel-good moment is looking like a one-off for now. After skating off gingerly at the end of his first shift of the evening, Stamkos did not return to the bench until after the second period began, and he didn't take the ice for the remainder of the game. It would appear that the issue has not been fully worked through as Stamkos has been declared "unfit to play" for Game 4. The question now becomes whether the Lightning can carry on the momentum from Game 3 without their captain on the ice, or if the Stars can bounce back in this series because of it.
