Patriots vs. Seahawks score, result: Seattle stops Cam Newton on dramatic final play - Sporting News

The Seahawks stopped Cam Newton at the goal line as time expired Sunday night to claim a 35-30 win over the Patriots.

Newton, who already had two rushing touchdowns in the game, lined up in the shotgun formation with three seconds left and his opponent likely expecting the draw. He's such a powerful downhill force it usually doesn't matter whether or not the defense sees a run coming. But on this occasion, Seattle managed to meet him at the line of scrimmage and keep him from powering forward.

It would have been a dramatic comeback victory for New England had Newton's run been successful. After trailing 35-23, Bill Belichick's squad scored a quick touchdown, made a defensive stop and put the ball in Newton's hands with more than a minute left. Newton led his team to the 1 but no further.

The Seahawks received a stellar performance from Russell Wilson, who after a pick-six on his first drive threw a touchdown pass each to five different receivers.

One of those pass-catchers, D.K. Metcalf, bested reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year Stephon Gilmore on a deep ball in the first half and appeared to get into Gilmore's head. Metcalf finished with four catches for a team-high 92 yards.
