Duluth Council approves developer for Enger Park Golf Course driving range - WDIO

Councilors unanimously approved a resolution choosing Consortium Minnesota Consulting Group LLC as the developer to create a development proposal for the driving range portion of Enger Park Golf Course.

The city says a minimum of 20 percent of any housing developments on the property need to be affordable housing.

Community members have voiced concerns about the potential sale of park land, but councilor Arik Forsman says the move could help the city from a financial standpoint.

"It's really been highlighted in this pandemic that we need to focus our city budget priorities on the greatest good for all, and as we look at how we responsibly re-invest in our golf courses, I think the potential sale of portions, and carefully carved out portions of golf course property is something worth discussing," said Forsman.

If the land were to be sold, the revenue generated from the sale would be re-invested into the city's golf courses.

Forsman also says in the case of a sale, the driving range would be relocated.

The developer is able to come up with plans for the property until January 20, 2022.

Also at Monday night's council meeting:

  • Jennifer Carlson was formally appointed as the City of Duluth's Finance Director
  • The council voted by a 6-3 margin to designate about two miles of trails in upper Chester Park only for cross country skiing during the winter grooming season.
  • The council gave the green light for the city to apply for a $3.5 million grant to fix a portion of the seawall.
