The University Libraries continues to plan for fall course resource needs, specifically on efforts to move to electronic course reserves for fall 2020 due to COVID-19.

The University Libraries (UL) recommends requests for electronic course reserves for fall are submitted by July 24. Requests submitted by or before July 24 should be accessible by the first day of fall classes. Requests submitted after July 24 will be added but may face delays.

UL subject librarians and members of the Course Reserves team are happy to help assess the needs of courses. It is recommended that the UL is notified about course needs as soon as possible. A new online request form for fall 2020 course materials support has been created and will address requests in the order they are received.

The UL recognize that there may be many circumstances unique to each situation and are ready to help. It can provide support to classes in many ways including:

  • Providing persistent URLs for digital resources
  • Identifying licensed and open educational resources that meet course needs
  • Scanning portions of print materials within fair use and providing PDFs
  • Identifying streaming options for some DVDs owned by the library
  • Licensing available streaming media as requested by instructors

University Libraries anticipates being open limited hours for the fall, but the use of physical collections may be reduced. There is incomplete and inconclusive information about COVID-19 survival on common library materials. Current guidance from professional organizations is to quarantine library materials for 72 hours. This prevents the library from providing timely access for many students. Transitioning physical reserves to online course materials will help students with the many courses already planned for online delivery.

Access to course texts and other resources made freely available by publishers during the spring, including RedShelf and VitalSource, has now been removed. Due to budget constraints, the University Libraries do not purchase required textbooks, however these materials can be requested for Inclusive Access via the UNM Bookstore. Please contact Peg Lewis (peglewis@unm.edu) before July 22 for additional information.

The University Libraries is dedicated to continually provide services to the UNM community during limited operations. A frequently updated guide to library services and operations is available to notify the community of any changes as they occur.
