Syracuse, N.Y. -- The coronavirus has put the brakes on an iconic high school ritual: getting a driver’s license.
While the Department of Motor Vehicles has restarted many services, it hasn’t yet begun administering a five-hour course required as part of the process for first-time drivers.
That could change in coming days, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s top aide.
Melissa DeRosa said this morning the DMV was looking at making the course virtual. She said an announcement would likely come in the next week.
According to the DMV, drivers who have a learner permit must also complete a five-hour “Pre-licensing Course” before taking a road test. That’s something they normally can take through the DMV or though a high school or college class, according to the DMV’s website.
With schools closed and services at the DMV limited, that part of the process is on hold.
“I remember how eager I was to get my license,” Cuomo said this morning when asked about the bottleneck for young drivers.
The question came from NY1′s Pat Kiernan, who said he was covering Cuomo’s conference call with his two teenage daughters, who are eager to start driving.
“Of course, I did not drive at all, Pat, until I got my license,” Cuomo said, laughing.
