Cullowhee, N.C. – The COVID-19 pandemic brought the sporting world to a sudden halt in the spring of 2020 as NCAA seasons for springtime sports were canceled in mid-March. Slowly, the country began to reopen through the early summer months and with that came a return to action in many sports including those – like golf – that are easy to provide physical or social distancing.
Here are notes from the golf course on some current and former Catamount men's golfers from this summer of 2020:
- Rising sophomore Pierre Viallaneix most recently finished in the runner-up spot by a mere stroke at the 59th annual JAGA Jacksonville Amateur Championship at the Jacksonville Beach Golf Club. Viallaneix posted rounds of 71-66-70 for a three-round score of 6-under par 207, five strokes ahead of the third-place finisher. He led the field entering Sunday's final round and stretched the advantage to as many as four strokes over the course of the last day. On the 54th hole, Viallaneix chipped in from 30 yards out for eagle on the par-5 18th only to see North Florida junior Cody Carroll roll in a three-foot birdie putt for the one-stroke victory;
- Viallaneix has put together a tremendous summer, playing in eight events with 11 combined rounds shot at a combined 25-under par and just one round over par to date;
- Incoming freshman Presten Richardson posted rounds of 73-70-71 for a 2-under par total and a sixth-place finish at the same AJGA St. Louis Junior Championship. Richardson claimed a Missouri high school state championship his junior year but was unable to defend as COVID-19 canceled his senior season;
- Rising junior Tumi Kúld carded a course record round of 64 at his home course club championship in Iceland in mid-July;
- Another rising junior Louis Theys claimed his fifth club championship in his home country of Belgium in early July. Theys battled wind and rainy conditions for rounds of 74 and 75 for the event to capture the hardware;
- Seeded 31st overall as an amateur in the Norwegian Match Play Championship, WCU rising sophomore Magnus Pedersen finished fourth overall, playing amongst many of the best golfers in Norway;
- Former Catamount and PGA TOUR professional J.T. Poston tallied a pair of top 10 finishes in the Tour's return to competitive action in June. Poston finished 10th at 11-under par 269 at the Charles Schwab Challenge held at the Colonial Country Club in mid-June in the first event back from the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown. The Hickory, N.C., native then posted an eighth-place finish at the RBC Heritage at the Harbour Town Golf Links in late June with a four-round score of 17-under par, 267.
- Another former Catamount Dylan MacQueen finished 10th at a Swing Thought TOUR event in mid-June, posting rounds of 70 and 66 at the Belmont Lake Golf Club. MacQueen has made both of the cuts on the tour since the return from the COVID-19 shutdown.
Western Carolina's complete 2020-21 event schedule and updated roster are slated to be released in the coming days ahead of the fall semester as the Catamounts gear-up for the fall portion of their season.
