Tigers vs. Royals: Live stats, updates, box score - MLive.com

DETROIT -- After back-to-back “bullpen days,” the Detroit Tigers are hoping for a long outing from Matthew Boyd in his second start of 2020.

Boyd and the Tigers (3-2) face the Kansas City Royals (3-2) on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. at Comerica Park. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Detroit.

Boyd, the Tigers’ No. 1 starter, allowed four runs on six hits in five innings of work last week at Cincinnati.

He’ll face Royals lefty Danny Duffy on Wednesday.

The Tigers and Royals have split the first two games of the four-game series.

Top 9th: Joe Jimenez pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to save one-run games on back-to-back nights. Final: Tigers 5, Royals 4.

Bottom 8th: The Tigers go quickly against Royals reliever Tyler Zuber, unable to provide an extra insurance run or two for closer Joe Jimenez. Tigers 5, Royals 4.

Top 8th: It’s the third consecutive 1-2-3 inning tonight for the Tigers bullpen. This time it’s Buck Farmer, who got three straight ground-outs. Tigers 5, Royals 4.

Bottom 7th: JaCoby Jones hit an opposite field homer to right off Royals reliever Ian Kennedy to give the Tigers their first lead of the night. Jones is 8-for-19 on the young season. Tigers 5, Royals 4.

Top 7th: Tigers reliever Bryan Garcia pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning, retiring the Royals and a pop-out and two grounders. Tigers 4, Royals 4.

Bottom 6th: C.J. Cron worked an 11-pitch lead-off walk but couldn’t advance, as Royals reliever Scott Barlow struck out Jeimer Candelario and Christin Stewart. Tigers 4, Royals 4.

Top 6th: Downriver’s Johnny Schreiber pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning of relief. Tigers 4, Royals 4.

Bottom 5th: The Tigers have very quickly got back into the game. Victor Reyes walked, JaCoby Jones hit his second double of the game and Niko Goodrum drove him Reyes with a sac fly. Then Jonathan Schoop hit a 345-foot homer to run just beyond the glove of Whit Merrifield. It’s a new game. Tigers 4, Royals 4.

Top 5th: Matthew Boyd gave up a double to Maikel Franco, who is 3-for-3 against him today, but strands him at second base. Royals 4, Tigers 1.

Bottom 4th: A 1-2-3 inning for Danny Duffy, who continues to cruise. He struck out C.J. Cron and Jeimer Candelario and got Christin Stewart to ground out. Royals 4, Tigers 1.

Top 4th: The Royals’ lead-off man reaches off Matthew Boyd for the fourth consecutive inning, but this time Boyd slammed the door by retiring the next three batters (aided by Christin Stewart’s sliding catch of a Whit Merrifield fly ball). Royals 4, Tigers 1.

Bottom 3rd: The Tigers had runners and second and third with nobody out and got one run home -- which is better than zero. But still a missed opportunity to claw back into the game. Grayson Greiner was hit by a pitch, JaCoby Jones doubled him to third and Jonathan Schoop brought him home on a sac fly. Royals 4, Tigers 1.

Top 3rd: The Royals pick up a couple more runs on four singles, some hit harder than others. Matthew Boyd finally broke out his curve on his 46th pitch of the game after relying entirely on his fastball and slider. Royals 4, Tigers 0.

Bottom 2nd: Danny Duffy struck out two more batters in a quick second inning. The Tigers’ lone baserunner so far today, Jeimer Candelario, reached on an error. Royals 2, Tigers 0.

Top 2nd: Adalberto Mondesi led off the inning with a well-struck triple to left center and scored on a sac fly from Bubba Starling. Lead-off extra-base hits have vexed Matthew Boyd in both innings. Royals 2, Tigers 0.

Bottom 1st: Royals starter Danny Duffy strikes out the side, getting Miguel Cabrera on three straight pitches, including two swings on balls out of the zone. Royals 1, Tigers 0.

Top 1st: Whit Merrifield continued his mastery of the Tigers generally and Matthew Boyd specifically with a lead-off double. He scored on Maikel Franco’s double down the right-field line to give the Royals the game’s first lead. Boyd did strike out two and get six swings-and-misses, a positive early sign. Royals 1, Tigers 0.
