Clarion University reverses course and plans to offer remote instruction for the fall semester - PennLive

Clarion University is the latest state university to announce it plans to offer primarily remote instruction for the fall semester in light of concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

University President Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson announced that the university, which last spring announced its intention to bring students back to campus for face-to-face instruction this fall, decided to go with remote instruction to decrease the population density on campus.

Further, she said it will ensure academic continuity for students by removing the possibility of a switch to remote learning later in the semester should an outbreak in coronavirus cases occur.

“Since March, a University Reopening Planning Committee has worked to allow the return of students, faculty and staff to campus,” Pehrsson said. “As the committee continued to monitor news about COVID-19, they determined the safest course of action is to move the majority of classes to remote delivery for fall 2020.”

This decision allows students and their families, as well as faculty and staff, to plan the entire semester and keeps students on pace for graduation, she said. Experiential classes, including student teaching, clinicals, externships, internships, and co-ops, will continue as scheduled.

Some courses offered this fall at this nearly 4,000-student university in western Pennsylvania will require students to log into their class at specific times to interact in real time with professors and other students. Other courses will not require specific log-in times, but will have deadlines to complete coursework, according to the university’s news release.

“Faculty and staff stand ready to ensure a positive university experience and to help students maintain their progress to graduation. Academic support will be available to help students navigate through the semester,” Pehrsson said.

The library, Student Support Services, computer labs, Becht, Gemmel, Tippin, the Recreation Center will be open, adhering to health and safety protocols; some services will require appointments.

Clarion plans to open its housing to students who prefer that option. However, students will be required to self-screen before coming to campus and once on campus, adhere to established protocol. Those who wish to withdraw from university housing may do so without penalty. Dining venues will be restricted and occupancy limits set for locations.

The university plans to finalize details regarding financial adjustments for students next week.

Earlier this week, Millersville University announced it was joining East Stroudsburg University in going to mostly remote course offerings. Earlier, West Chester University announced it would be offering its fall classes online and wouldn’t be having in-person classes.

As recently as Tuesday, Shippensburg University President Laurie Carter said her university was still planning to offer a mix of in-person classes and online instruction this fall.
