San Francisco’s first indoor miniature golf course, Urban Putt, has shuttered after a decade. However, a successor is already in the works.

The closure was announced in a Facebook post written by proprietor Steve Fox on Monday, expressing gratitude to “the thousands of customers” who enjoyed the venue at South Van Ness Avenue and 22nd Street in the Mission District.

“I was there that last night that we closed. I walked around the course, looked at things and my heart was quite heavy,” Fox told Mission Local, which first reported the news. “It’s heartbreaking.”

Urban Putt, a combination of a restaurant, bar and mini-golf course, opened in 2014 inside a former mortuary following a successful $50,000 Kickstarter campaign.

The venue’s distinctive design, featuring a submarine, duck shooting gallery and replicas of Sutro Tower and the Transamerica Pyramid, made it a popular choice for first dates, after-work gatherings and social media posts. Despite its closure, miniature golf enthusiasts will not have to hang up their clubs for long.

Funlab, an Australian company that operates more than 40 mini-golf and bowling venues worldwide, previously announced it will take over the San Francisco location. It plans to rebrand it as a mini-golf course and bar “that turns traditional putt putt into a multi-sensory labyrinth of unique holes,” according to its website.

The revamped attraction may open as early as March, with plans to expand the current 14-hole course to 18 holes.

Fox, a former editor at PC World, said his decision to sell the venue to Funlab was motivated by the challenges Urban Putt faced during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“That whole period when we were closed, I would go into work literally every day and just walk around in the empty space, just trying to figure out what I could do, and the answer was there wasn’t much to do,” he told Mission Local.

While he bids farewell to San Francisco, Fox is gearing up to open a $6 million Urban Putt location in downtown San Jose later this month.

In the meantime, San Francisco residents seeking mini-golf thrills can visit Stagecoach Greens in Mission Bay or Subpar in Ghirardelli Square.
