Airline company announces new direct route, special fares from Orlando to Bermuda
UPDATED ON ANY OTHER INCIDENTS THROUGHOUT THE AREA. WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING, A MAJOR HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IN EAST ORANGE COUNTY GOT SHUT DOWN. THE DEVELOPER WANTED TO PUT NEARLY 1800 HOMES NEAR LAKE PICKETT. LET’S BRING IN WESH 2’S BOB HAZEN. HE IS THERE. LIVE NEAR THE AREA. BOB. ORANGE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS MET UNTIL ROUGHLY ONE THIS MORNING BEFORE THEN VOTING IT DOWN. YEAH THAT’S RIGHT. AND PEOPLE HAVE BEEN FIGHTING THIS PROJECT HERE IN THIS AREA IN FACT, MANY OF THEM PUT UP THESE SIGNS ALL OVER THE AREA NEAR WHERE THIS DEVELOPMENT WOULD BE GOING IN. AND THIS MORNING THEY DO HAVE A VICTORY. ORANGE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS MET FOR HOURS. AROUND 100 PEOPLE COMING OUT TO SPEAK ABOUT THE CESTINY DEVELOPMENT. IT WOULD BE IN A VERY RURAL PART OF EAST ORANGE COUNTY, NEAR BITHLO, OFF LAKE PICKETT ROAD, WHERE MANY DEVELOPERS HAVE TRIED IN THE PAST TO BUILD OVER THE YEARS, SESTINI WOULD HAVE BROUGHT 1800 HOMES IN THE DEVELOPER SAY IT WOULD BE FOCUSED ON PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT HERE, AND IT WOULD BE SUSTAINABLE. BUT MANY PEOPLE WORRIED ABOUT THE IMPACT OF THE ECON RIVER BASIN, PLUS THE TRAFFIC. BUT TODAY WE’VE HAD THE ABILITY TO WORK WITH. UNIVERSITIES AND THINK TANKS AROUND THE STATE, AS WELL AS SOME EXPERTS IN HOUSING ECONOMICS, AS WELL AS SOME GREAT MINDS IN SUSTAINABILITY AND WE BELIEVE THAT WE’VE CREATED A COMMUNITY THAT IS FAR SURPASSING WHAT WE CAME TO BEFORE, AS WELL AS MAYBE ONE OF THE MOST SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA. WE’RE NOT SAYING NO, DON’T BUILD, DON’T DEVELOP. WE’RE SAYING WORK WITH THE COMMUNITY AND BUILD SOMETHING THAT FITS THEIR. PLEASE STATE YOUR NAME AND ADDRESS FOR THE RECORD. AND ORANGE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGAIN VOTE 4 TO 3 TO DENY THE CESTINY DEVELOPMENT. WE DON’T KNOW YET IF THE DEVELOPER HAS ANY PLANS TO TRY TO RETOOL THOSE PLANS AND BRING THEM BACK TO THE ORANGE COUNTY COMMISSION LATER TO TRY TO GET APPROVAL IN THE FUTURE. REPORTING LIVE IN EAST ORANGE COUNTY, BOB HAZEN WESH TWO NEWS. AND NOW TO COMMITMENT 2020 FOR THE FIRST IN THE NATION PRIMARY IS OFFICIALLY IN THE BOOKS. FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP IS THE PROJECTED WINNER OVER FORMER UN AMBASSADOR NIKKI HALEY, WITH ABOUT 90% OF THE VOTES COUNTED, TRUMP HAS A 12 POINT LEAD OVER HALEY. LET’S BRING IN SANIKA DANGE NOW THIS MORNING AND SANIKA. DESPITE THESE RESULTS, THOUGH, HALEY SAYS SHE IS VOWING TO STAY IN THE RACE. O THE FORMER UN AMBASSADOR SAYS HER RACE FOR THE WHITE HOUSE IS FAR FROM OVER. HER CAMPAIGN HAS VOWED TO STAY PUT, AT LEAST THROUGH SUPER TUESDAY IN MARCH, WHEN 16 STATES WILL VOTE. WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU. WE WILL NEVER FORGET. WE STILL HAVE A WAYS TO GO, BUT WE KEEP MOVING UP. ALL RIGHT, LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHERE THE DELEGATE COUNT STANDS THIS MORNING, TRUMP PICKED UP 12 MORE NEW HAMPSHIRE. THAT BRINGS HIM TO 32. HALEY PICKED UP NINE, BRINGING HER TO 17. AND KEEP IN MIND HERE, 1215 ARE WHAT’S NEEDED TO WIN THE NOMINATION. MEANWHILE, ON THE DEMOCRATIC SIDE, PRESIDENT BIDEN WON NEW HAMPSHIRE DESPITE BEING A WRITE IN CANDIDATE WITH ABOUT TWO THIRDS OF THE VOTES COUNTED. BIDEN HAS A NEARLY 50 POINT LEAD OVER DEAN PHILLIPS AT A CAMPAIGN EVENT YESTERDAY, BIDEN WARNED DOMESTIC ISSUES LIKE ABORTION AND ACCESS ARE WHAT’S AT STAKE. IN NOVEMBER, AFTER IT WAS DONALD TRUMP AND HIS SUPREME COURT WHO RIPPED AWAY THE RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS OF WOMEN IN AMERICA. AND IT WILL BE JOE BIDEN AND KAMALA HARRIS AND ALL OF YOU. WHO ARE GOING TO RESTORE THOSE RIGHTS FOR THE WOMEN OF AMERICA, BOTH REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS HAVE THEIR EYES ON SOUTH CAROLINA, WHERE PRIMARIES ARE BEING HELD NEXT MONTH ON SEPARATE DAYS. AND OF COURSE, YOU CAN COUNT ON WESH TWO TO HAVE THE VERY LATEST AS WE INCH CLOSER TO NOVEMBER. FOR JASON MAYER, BACK TO YOU. ALL RIGHT. SANIKA AND HAPPENING TODAY IN TALLAHASSEE, A PROPOSAL THAT WOULD STOP PEOPLE YOUNGER THAN 16 FROM CREATING SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS IS POISED TO PASS IN OUR STATE HOUSE. SHELDON DUTES JOINS US NOW IN THE STUDIO IN SHELDON. LAWMAKERS TWEAKED THE BILL SLIGHTLY ON TUESDAY AND JASON ISMIR THOSE CHANGES ARE RELATED TO HOW THEY DEFINE A SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM. REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS SAY IT’S ANYTHING THAT USES WHAT THEY DESCRIBE AS ADDICTIVE, HARMFUL OR DECEPTIVE DESIGN FEATURES THAT CAUSE USERS TO HAVE A COMPULSIVE NEED TO USE THE PLATFORM. NOW, ALONG WITH PREVENTING KIDS UNDER THE AGE OF 16 FROM CREATING SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS, THIS BILL WOULD REQUIRE COMPANIES TO USE WHAT LAWMAKERS CALL REASONABLE AGE VERIFICATION METHODS FOR ALL USERS WHO CREATE ACCOUNTS. IT WOULD ALSO REQUIRE COMPANIES TO CLOSE EXISTING ACCOUNTS IF THEY KNOW THAT PERSON IS UNDER 16. AN ACCOUNT HOLDERS WOULD HAVE 90 DAYS TO APPEAL. THE HOUSE IS EXPECTED TO PASS THIS BILL TODAY, AND THERE ARE SOME SIMILAR BILLS IN THE STATE SENATE, BUT THEY HAVE NOT HAD ANY COMMITTEE HEARINGS JUST YET. GUYS. ALL RIGHT. SHELDON, WE TURN NOW TO VOLUSIA COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS AREN’T READY YET TO MOVE FORWARD WITH A PROPOSED POLICY CHANGE THAT WOULD ALLOW THE DISTRICT TO SEARCH STUDENTS DURING CLASS HOURS. LET’S BRING IN WESH 2’S TONY ATKINS. HE’S WITH US HERE IN THE STUDIO THIS MORNING. AND TONY, THIS IS BEING MET WITH SOME PUSHBACK. JASON. THIS PROPOSAL WOULD ALLOW LAW ENFORCEMENT AND DISTRICT ADMINISTRATORS TO RANDOMLY SEARCH STUDENTS DURING SCHOOL HOURS WITHOUT. PROBABLE CAUSE. NOW THAT IS SOMETHING THEY AREN’T ABLE TO DO UNDER THE CURRENT RULES. THE TOPIC CAME UP DURING TUESDAY NIGHT’S BOARD MEETING. BOARD CHAIR JAMIE HAYES PROPOSED THIS AND SAYS IT’S A MATTER OF SAFETY, BUT SOME PARENTS EXPRESSED THEIR CONCERNS IN THE MEETING, WONDERING WHO WOULD DO THE SEARCHES, HOW THEY WOULD BE DONE, AND HOW OFTEN STUDENTS WOULD BE SEARCHED. WHAT DOES RANDOM SEARCHES WITHOUT CAUSE FOR ALL VISITORS USING METAL DETECTORS LOOK LIKE? WHAT IMPACTS WILL THIS HAVE ON THE STUDENTS? IS THIS CONSTITUTIONAL? IS THIS A VIOLATION OF PARENTAL RIGHTS? ULTIMATELY, THE BOARD VOTED TO REVISIT THE TOPIC. BOARD MEMBERS SAY IT’LL LIKELY BE ON MARCH 12TH. THEY ALSO MENTIONED THE POSSIBILITY OF BRINGING STUDENTS AND STUDENT GOVERNMENT INTO THE CONVERSATION, AS WELL. GUYS, TONY. TODAY MARKS 18 YEARS SINCE JENNIFER KIRKSEY WAS LAST SEEN LEAVING FOR WORK AND NEVER RETURNING. JENNIFER WAS JUST 24 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME. SHE VANISHED. POLICE FIRST FOUND HER CAR ABANDONED AND THEN RELEASED GRAINY SURVEILLANCE VIDEO OF A MAN THEY WANTED TO QUESTION. BUT THE CASE REMAINS UNSOLVED. HER PARENTS RELEASED A STATEMENT ON SOCIAL MEDIA, READING IN PART TO THIS FAMILY. IT STILL FEELS VERY MUCH LIKE YESTERDAY. AND TO THIS DAY, WE CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR JENNIFER’S RETURN EVERY DAY, IN EVERY WAY. IT GOES ON TO SAY IT IS ALMOST INCONCEIVABLE THAT WITH TODAY’S TECHNOLOGY, WE ARE CHALLENGED JUST AS MUCH AS WE WERE 18 YEARS AGO. THE CASSIE FAMILY SAYS THEY WILL NEVER GIVE UP ON FINDING JUSTICE FOR JENNIFER. THE PINE HILLS COMMUNITY COUNCIL HAS A NEW BOARD OF DIRECTORS. I SOLEMNLY SWEAR. I SOLEMNLY SWEAR THAT I WILL SUPPORT LAST NIGHT’S MEETING TOOK PLACE AT THE NEW ORANGE COUNTY MULTICULTURAL CENTER, AND THE BOARD TALKED ABOUT A RANGE OF COMMUNITY ISSUES, INCLUDING HOW TO ADDRESS HOMELESSNESS AND SAFETY AND THE CONTINUED EFFORT TO HAVE PINE HILLS ESTABLISHED AS ITS OWN CITY. THE BOARD IS DYNAMIC. IT’S AMAZING AS FAR AS THE BACKGROUND AND THE EXPERTISE AND WE’RE JUST LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING TOGETHER WITH THE COMMUNITY AND THE RESIDENTS TO BRING IT ALL TOGETHER. WE’RE READY TO SEE PINE HILLS THRIVE AND BE REVITALIZED AND FOR IT NOT TO TAKE ANOTHER 10 OR 20 YEARS, THE NEXT PINE HILLS COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETING IS SET FOR FEBRUARY 6TH. THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION IS WORKING WITH FEDERAL PARTNERS TO FUND EXPANDING TRANSIT SERVICES IN CENTRAL FLORIDA. YESTERDAY MORNING, ORANGE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS HEARD AN UPDATE TO THE PROPOSED SUNSHINE CORRIDOR. IT WOULD LENGTHEN SUNRAIL ROUTE TO ORLANDO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, THE CONVENTION CENTER, AND ALSO I-DRIVE. FDOT SAYS A RECENT SURVEY SHOWED 98% OF PARTICIPANTS SUPPORT THE EXPANSION. THE NEXT STEPS INCLUDE A STUDY
