Bobby Wagner isn’t one to put negative thoughts into the air. So, the Seahawks’ defensive captain rejected the premise of a question about whether the team feels a sense of urgency because of how dire a fifth loss in seven weeks would be.
“I like to think positive, so 3-4 sounds a lot better than 2-5,” Wagner said Thursday ahead of Seattle’s Monday night game at home against the Saints.
Coach Pete Carroll said there was a more “serious” vibe in the locker room after Seattle’s Week 3 loss to Minnesota. The team was 1-2 with a pair of NFC West games against the 49ers and Rams on deck. Everyone knew what was at stake. This game against New Orleans (3-2) is even more important. The Seahawks are 2-4 and entered the weekend in last place in the NFC West. Little changed after Sunday’s slate of games: The Cardinals improved to 7-0 by beating the Texans and the Rams moved to 6-1 by defeating the Lions. The 49ers lost to the Colts, though, and dropped to 2-4.
Carroll has said a few times that he’s disappointed in how his team has started the season. Both sides of the ball have been wildly inconsistent and the defense has mostly been bad in all areas. Because of this slow start, Carroll feels the real story of this season may not be properly told until eight or 10 weeks into the year.
But it won’t even take that long if the Seahawks, who are 4.5-point underdogs, can’t pull off a home upset Monday night.
