Charleston, S.C. – Quarterback Carlos Davis threw for a career-high 401 yards and three touchdowns while running back TJ Jones amassed 205 total yards, including 132 rushing with a pair of scores and three catches for 73 yards and a touchdown as Western Carolina upended The Citadel 45-31 on Saturday afternoon at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

The win for the Catamounts was their first of the season and the first under head coach Kerwin Bell, halting a six-game seasonal slide and eight-straight defeats dating back to last season.

Davis threw for 320 of his 401 yards in the first half as the Catamounts built a three-touchdown, 31-10 lead at intermission. The Bulldogs commanded the third quarter in pulling to within one score headed to the fourth quarter before the Catamounts used two long Jones scoring rushes of 30 and 53 yards to surge back in front 45-24 with The Citadel tacking on a late touchdown to provide the final tally.

On Saturday, Davis completed 31-of-40 passes to nine different receivers, with Raphael Williams hauling in a career-best 12 catches for a career-high 147 receiving yards with a touchdown. Williams' 12 catches are tied for the fourth-most in a single game in program history as he finished with his third career 100-yard receiving game. Jones rumbled for 132 yards on the ground, with Kenny Benjamin adding 49 rushing yards and a second-quarter touchdown. Calvin Jones got the Catamounts started with a seven-yard receiving score in the first quarter.

Richard McCollum accounted for nine points for the Catamounts, connecting on all six of his PATs and chipping home a 22-yard field goal on the first half's final play to provide the three-score lead at halftime.

Western Carolina's defense held the Bulldogs rushing attack – which entered the game first in the SoCon and second in the nation – to a season-low 177 rushing yards, limiting quarterback Jaylan Adams to just 57 yards rushing with a three-yard touchdown run. Adams completed 5-of-10 passes for 126 yards, including four passes to Raleigh Webb for 144 yards. Logan Billings ran for 54 yards and two touchdowns.

Linebacker Kareem Taylor led the Catamount defense with 10 tackles, including seven solo stops and two for losses, while Ricky Palao was credited with nine stops with a sack and a fumble recovery. Ivan Hogans had seven tackles with two for loss, including a sack, while Ty Harris had six stops with a TFL.

Western Carolina returns to action next Saturday on the road at Wofford at Gibbs Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm and will be broadcast on ESPN+ with live audio provided by the Catamount Sports Network.
