Forget the idea that Framber Valdez would continue the dominance he showed in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. Valdez admittedly was undone at least in part by his own nerves Tuesday night, allowing five runs in two-plus innings.
Likewise, dismiss the notion that the Braves’ biggest edge might be their superior rotation. True, Game 2 pitcher Max Fried still might be the best starter in the Series. But Charlie Morton is out until spring training after suffering a fractured right fibula in Game 1, an injury that was shocking and heartbreaking, considering that Morton is widely regarded as not only one of the best pitchers in the game, but also one of the best people.
If you had told the Braves beforehand they would win the Series opener, 6-2, with Morton lasting only 2 1/3 innings, they would have happily accepted that outcome. As badly as they feel for Morton, they will press forward as they have all season, believing they are reasonably well-positioned to withstand the loss of even the veteran right-hander, who is known for his clutch performances in October.
If Fried wins Game 2, the Braves will head to Atlanta leading two games to none, in seeming control of the Series. It’s a logical expectation, given that Astros starter José Urquidy has pitched only once in the past 24 days, lasting just 1 2/3 innings against the Red Sox in Game 3 of the ALCS. But what exactly about this postseason has been logical?
The Astros looked cooked after falling behind in the ALCS, two games to one, and trailing, 2-1, in the eighth inning of Game 4. But they rallied to beat the Red Sox three straight games, reaching the Series for the third time in five years. They’re not going to panic. They never seem to panic. And while Michael Brantley, Kyle Tucker and Yuli Gurriel combined for seven of their eight hits Tuesday night, it’s safe to assume the best offense in the majors during the regular season will average more than two runs per game in this best-of-seven, though none of their regulars has ever faced Fried.
