SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Brigham Young University has offered a new course that dives into the philosophy of song lyrics written by pop star Taylor Swift.
Political science and philosophy professor Dr. Ryan Davis said he's turned one of his "wildest dreams" into reality by offering a course dedicated to the famed singer-songwriter.
He’s been a passionate Taylor Swift fan since her debut album in 2006. He has successfully brought his love for the artist into the classroom, introducing a philosophy course called "Ms. Americana: Taylor Swift on Ethics and Society."
The idea of a Swift-related course idea has been on his mind for years.
He aptly calls his work "Philoswiftie."
Students seemed to be embracing the opportunity to delve into Swift's world through a philosophical lens.
Julia Chatterly, a senior political science major, adjusted her entire schedule to accommodate the Taylor Swift class. She joined roughly 30 others who also enrolled.

Davis said coursework includes analyzing Taylor Swift's lyrics to explore philosophical concepts.
In a recent class, students discussed a paper by David Vallimant on the concept of self - drawing parallels with Swifts songs like "Snow on the Beach" and "Dear Reader."
Davis said he hopes similar courses gain popularity.
He said as long as students are invested in a particular subject, teachers will find ways to engage with them.
The overarching goal of Davis's course is to connect with students through their interest in the pop star.
The course was new for the Winter 2024 semester. Davis said he hoped for a second semester of "Ms. Americana: Taylor Swift on Ethics and Society."
