The Mets’ pitching throttled the Braves’ potent offense for 17.2 innings over the first two games of this series. The floodgates that seemingly opened in the ninth inning with Marcell Ozuna’s game-tying home run Saturday afternoon remained so Sunday, as the Braves pounded the Mets 14-1 in the series finale.
The Braves jumped on New Jersey native Rick Porcello in his debut with his childhood favorite team for two runs in the first inning on RBI singles from Matt Adams and Dansby Swanson. Meanwhile, Braves starter Sean Newcomb was wild early, seemingly inviting the Mets to break out themselves. But Newcomb pitched around back-to-back hit batters in the bottom of the first—helped out by Yoenis Cespedes and Amed Rosario swinging at clear ball fours—and surrendered only one in the second when Brandon Nimmo doubled home Tomas Nido, who has walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
With the score 2-1 entering the top of the third, Porcello wouldn’t record another out. While his defense didn’t help—a Jeff McNeil error on a dribbler started the inning, and J.D. Davis took a suspect route on one RBI double—the Braves hit him hard—and continued to pummel on the Mets’ bullpen, putting up runs in every inning from the third to the seventh en route to the 14-1 blowout. Proposed Tuesday starter Corey Oswalt and Paul Sewald soaked up innings and took their bruises from a potent Atlanta attack that launched 11 extra base hits in a game that quickly devolved into a laugher.
