A pair of Washington County teens were named Wednesday evening among the 10 best science and math scholars in the high school class of 2020 by the nation’s most prestigious science competition for U.S. high school seniors.
Rupert Li, a recent graduate of Jesuit High, won fourth place in the competition, based on his advanced mathematics research project and his math and logic problem-solving skills. He was awarded $100,000 toward his college and graduate school education.
Rohan Wagh, who graduated from Sunset High this spring, place ninth, based on his environmental engineering breakthrough and science problem-solving skills. He won $50,000.

Oregon’s population represents about 1.3% of the nation’s 328 million people. So statistically, placing two students among the national Top 10 suggests Li and Wagh allowed the state to punch far above its weight in terms of exceptional youth science and math achievement.
Lillian Petersen of Los Alamos, New Mexico won top honors in the contest and awarded $250,000. Peterson, who is headed to Harvard, invented a simple tool for predicting harvests early in the growing season, which helps to improve food distribution planning and offers a promising technique to help reduce global food insecurity.
