DETROIT -- It was a night of debuts, and most of them didn’t go well.
Michael Fulmer pitched in his first game in almost two years, while three Detroit Tigers rookie pitchers made their big-league debuts, as the Tigers were thrashed by the Kansas City Royals 14-6 on Monday night at Comerica Park.
The Royals tied a franchise record with six home runs, including three against Fulmer.
Tigers relievers Kyle Funkhouser, Beau Burrows and Anthony Castro -- all pitching for the first time in the big leagues -- combined to allow 10 runs in a little over four innings.
The Tigers (2-2) play three more against the Royals (2-2) this week at Comerica Park.
Check out the box score and game rewind below.
Bottom 9th: Miguel Cabrera and Dawel Lugo drew two-out walks from Gabe Speier (which is not what you want to do in the ninth inning of an eight-run game), but the Tigers failed to score. Royals 14, Tigers 6.
Top 9th: Hey, another debut! Anthony Castro gave up a two-run homer to Brett Phillips, the Royals’ sixth of the night. That ties a franchise record. Royals 14, Tigers 6.
Top 8th: Tigers reliever John Schreiber pitches the first 1-2-3- inning of the night for Detroit. Royals 12, Tigers 6.
Bottom 7th: A 1-2-3 inning ended by C.J. Cron, who is 0-for-4 with four strikeouts tonight. Royals 12, Tigers 6.
Top 7th: Carson Fulmer pitched a scoreless inning in his debut as a Tiger, although he walked a batter and threw nearly as many balls as strikes. He ended the inning by striking out Adalberto Mondesi. Royals 12, Tigers 6.
Bottom 6th: Victor Reyes was down 0-2 against Royals reliever Josh Staumont, who was smoking 98 and 99 mph fastballs, but he put a curve in the first-row of right field for his first home run of the year. Royals 12, Tigers 6.
Top 6th: Beau Burrows gives up a lead-off double to Ryan O’Hearn but retires the next three batters to strand the runner. Royals 12, Tigers 5.
Bottom 5th: C.J. Cron, the Tigers’ best hitter over the weekend, struck out for the third time in as many at-bats and the Tigers go quietly. Royals 12, Tigers 5.
Top 5th: The Royals fifth homer of the night is a two-run shot to right field by Jorge Soler off Beau Burrows. This one is getting ugly. Royals 12, Tigers 5.
Bottom 4th: It looked Royals reliever was going to buck the trend of rough MLB debuts tonight, but he exited with an injury mid-inning. No word on what happened. Kevin McCarthy entered and finished the scoreless innings. Royals 10, Tigers 5.
Top 4th: This is not shaping up to be a great night for Tigers’ debuts. Kyle Funkhouser gave up five runs on four hits and two walks. The last two of them crossed the plate after he had already left the game. Rookie Beau Burrows entered in relief and served up a three-run home run to Maikel Franco, his second of the game. Royals 10, Tigers 5.
Bottom 3rd: Mike Montgomery’s night is short and yet another pitcher makes his MLB debut. That would be Foster Griffin, who retires the side in order, striking out C.J. Cron. Nicely done. Tigers 5, Royals 4.
Top 3rd: The Royals hit two more home runs off Michael Fulmer, including a mammoth 434-shot to left-center by Salvador Perez. Fulmer gives way to Kyle Funkhouser, who makes his MLB debut and ends the inning. Tigers 5, Royals 4.
Bottom 2nd: A five-run inning for the Tigers, who put the ball in play a few times to fill the bases and then got big hits from JaCoby Jones (a three-run homer) and Niko Goodrum (a triple to the right-center gap). Two of the runs were unearned, thanks to an error by Adalberto Mondesi at short. Tigers 5, Royals 1.
Top 2nd: Michael Fulmer was having plenty of success with his slider, but he hung one to Maikel Franco, who put it in the left-field seats. Royals 1, Tigers 0.
Bottom 1st: Miguel Cabrera gets his second hit of the season on a sharply hit liners to left-center, but Mike Montgomery strikes out C.J. Cron to end the inning. Royals 0, Tigers 0.
Top 1st: Michael Fulmer looks really good in his first inning of work since 2018. He gets three swinging strikes on sliders, including two in a strikeout of Jorge Soler. Royals 0, Tigers 0.
Pregame: The lack of fans didn’t stop the Tigers from doing traditional Opening Day introductions.
The Tigers also honored legendary player Al Kaline, who passed away in April.
