The defending World Series champion Washington Nationals host the New York Yankees on Thursday night at Nationals Park as Major League Baseball starts a season unlike any other. First pitch is set for 7:08 p.m. ET (here's info on how to watch). The 2020 MLB season opener will be the first meaningful MLB game since Game 7 of the 2019 World Series on Oct. 30, 2019. Opening Day was originally scheduled for March 26 of this year before the coronavirus pandemic shut down baseball.
The Yankees will send out their new ace to the mound in Gerrit Cole, whom they signed to a record-breaking $324 million deal this offseason. Meanwhile, the Nats will turn to their veteran righty Max Scherzer, who is making his fifth career Opening Day start. It's a must-watch Opening Day pitching matchup. Washington star Juan Soto, however, will not be part of the opener after testing positive for COVID-19. Viewers might see some of the league's new rules on display Thursday night, but there will not be any fans in attendance at Nationals Park tonight's game. The Yankees are one of the favorites to win the 2020 World Series title, while the Nationals' odds took a bit of hit following the departure of All-Star third baseman Anthony Rendon this past offseason.
