Tigers’ Spencer Turnbull throwing smoke: 5 takeaways, box score from Saturday - MLive.com

DETROIT -- It’s a fake game with no umpires and sometimes made-up rules, so there’s no reason not to focus on the positive rather than dwell on the negative.

That’s what the Detroit Tigers did after Saturday afternoon’s intrasquad game.

Starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull looked really, really good through eight-and-a-half batters. Things unraveled a bit after that, but there’s still time to build up endurance in the final two weeks of camp.

Turnbull’s day leads off our list of observations. Scroll to the bottom to check out the box score for the day.

1. Spence throwing smoke.

Turnbull retired the first eight batters he faced on Saturday, four on strikeouts and four on weak contact. He was up 0-2 on the No. 9 hitter, Willi Castro, and was just one pitch from walking off the mound with a perfect day under his belt.

In that sense, what followed was a good lesson in just how tough this game is and just how quickly a good day can turn into a bad one.

Willi Castro worked a walk. The next two batters -- Victor Reyes and Harold Castro -- tattooed doubles to the wall in left- and right-center.

And with that, Turnbull had reached his pitch limit and his day was done.

“We liked what we saw,” said Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire. “His velo was good. He just ran out of gas and you could see it. It was his first time out there and he got the adrenaline going and that always takes away from you after you calm down.”

2. Speaking of throwing smoke.

There’s no velocity reading flashed on the scoreboard during the intrasquad games, so media are left to guess at the numbers. But Gardenhire said the Tigers were a bit concerned after reliever Jose Cisnero’s first outing a couple of days ago.

On Saturday, he pitched two perfect innings, striking out three, and seemed to be throwing flames.

“We were a little concerned because the ball hadn’t jumped out of his hand, but today it really came out of his hand,” Gardenhire said.

Cisnero is almost certainly assured a spot in the Tigers’ bullpen.

3. Hittin’ Harold.

Castro extended his four-game hitting streak and is now 7-for-11 with three runs, three doubles and four RBIs in intrasquad play.

Castro has played exclusively in the infield, although he’s not a bad outfielder and was used last year as a super-utility player capable of playing all over the field.

It’s widely assumed that Jordy Mercer will make the club as a utility infielder, but if the Tigers decide to go in a different direction, Castro could fill that role.

In any case, Castro is all but assured of a roster spot in some capacity. If the decision wasn’t made before, his recent performance has probably sealed it.

4. Cron and Schoop go long.

First baseman C.J. Cron and second baseman Jonathan Schoop both went long on Saturday, but Cron wasn’t completely satisfied.

After the game was over, he spent about 30 minutes taking swings on a machine that spun curve balls to the batter’s box.

“Crony told us he wanted to hit after the game and then he hit a home run, so we said, ‘Do you still want to hit?‘"

He did. Cron said he was concerned he wasn’t good read on pitches in the box.

“We call it a little bit of a panic. The closer you get to game time, the more you’re going to see it in guys,” Gardenhire said.

Gardenhire said Tigers’ hitting coaches are willing to offer any help that a player wants, but sometimes it’s best just to calm down and trust that what got you here hasn’t suddenly abandoned you.

5. On the sidelines.

There are 53 players currently in Tigers’ summer camp. Fifty-two of them have appeared in intrasquad games. The only who hasn’t is starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann.

Gardenhire said he was “fine.”

It’s possible he could pitch on Sunday. Zimmermann has also used side sessions, bullpens or minor league games in lieu of Grapefruit League games over the last two springs, so perhaps he’s trying something similar this summer. We’ll find out tomorrow.

The Tigers are a bit thin on outfielders, as Travis Demeritte has missed the last two games with a sore groin. Gardenhire said he didn’t think it was serious.
