Boeheim’s Army eliminated in TBT: Poor shooting, lack of scoring dooms Syracuse team - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Sideline Cancer eliminated Boeheim’s Army from The Basketball Tournament Saturday, using a big third quarter to create separation from a team that simply could not score.

Boeheim’s Army shot 15 percent (4-for-27) from the 3-point line and 30 percent overall (20-of-66) Saturday in Columbus. Those woeful numbers translated to a lopsided loss.

Boeheim’s Army could not make shots Tuesday, either, but relied on its penetration and finishing skills to win its first TBT game. It also got to the free throw line. On Saturday, Sideline Cancer’s defense refused to allow Boeheim’s Army to do much of anything.

When Sideline Cancer eliminated driving options on Saturday, Boeheim’s Army needed to make shots.

And that, it could not do.

At one point in the second half, Boeheim’s Army went nine minutes without a bucket. Sideline Cancer outscored Boeheim’s Army 24-10 during that stretch. When the game advanced to the Elam Ending, the target score was 65. Boeheim’s Army, at that point, trailed 57-38.

Sideline Cancer dominated the backboards (53-36). They were tougher, more organized offensively and simply better than Boeheim’s Army. The final score: 65-48.

Because of that, Sideline Cancer advanced to TBT’s final four on Sunday.

Eric Devendorf led Boeheim’s Army with 14 points. John Gillon had 10 and Andrew White scored 11 and grabbed six rebounds.

Maurice Creek’s 22 led Sideline Cancer. Keene, who sank the Elam-ending winning 3, finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Eric Thompson hauled in 18 boards for Sideline Cancer, which will play Overseas Elite on Sunday in the final four.

The game slogged to a 24-24 tie at the half.

Nobody could score. Nobody could shoot.

Boeheim’s Army was 11-for-35 overall in that half and 1-for-14 from the 3-point line. Boeheim’s Army had difficulties penetrating the lane with its dribble and struggled to finish once it did reach the rim. Credit Sideline Cancer’s defense for part of it -- those guys stayed in front and made it hard for the Boeheim’s Army guys to get much going to the basket.

On the other end, Boeheim’s Army’s zone, coupled with the inaction of Sideline’s playmaker Marcus Keene (3 first-half fouls), stymied that team’s ability to score. Sideline Cancer’s best moments of offense came in transition, when they caught Boeheim’s Army watching after a missed 3 and raced to the offensive end. Sideline Cancer outscored Boeheim’s Army 9-2 in fast break points.

But it was the lack of shooting and scoring by both teams that made that first half a commitment.

For Syracuse fans bemoaning the loss, consider this: Sideline Cancer is an original TBT team playing for eradicating pancreatic cancer. Each player gives up potential prize money to the cause.

Boeheim’s Army prepared for Saturday’s game by shooting and stretching in the Columbus Convention Center, where TBT planted four separate basketball courts to help discourage Covid-19 contamination among the teams.

The best thing about highlight videos? Nobody ever misses.

First game -- Overseas Elite has lost a single game in TBT over the years -- that was last summer. But the TBT colossus continued to dominate the competition by eliminating Herd That, a team of former Marshall players (and others) in Saturday’s first game.

Overseas Elite joined Red Scare (Dayton alumni) and Golden Eagles (Marquette alumni) in Sunday’s final four. Red Scare will play Golden Eagles at 4 p.m. Sunday; Overseas Elite faces Sideline Cancer at 6.

The first half of Overseas Elite-Herd That featured the back-and-forth scoring between former NBA all-star Joe Johnson and Jon Elmore. Johnson (Overseas Elite) had 17 first half points; Elmore (Herd That) scored 20.

But Johnson was too much for Herd That in the second half. He finished with 35 efficient points (15-of-23, 5-of-6 from 3), including the Elam Ending game-winner on a turnaround jumper. He rebounded, he passed the ball. He and guard Frank Session were Overseas Elite’s two best players Saturday, but that is a roster built for flexibility.

Final score: 93-76.

Overseas Elite shot 58 percent from the 3-point line and outrebounded Herd That 42-30.
