Syracuse, N.Y. — Syracuse police are investigating vandalism done to several greens at the city’s Burnet Park Golf Course on Sunday.

Police spokesman Sgt. Matt Malinowski today said the damage was done by someone on an orange/red dirt motorcycle who rode over the greens and appeared to have spun a rear tire between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.

Illegal dirt bikes in the city have been a focus of police since the spring, Malinowski said. The motorcycles, and all-terrain vehicles, have become a common source of complaints — being ridden in city parks, on city streets and racing through lawns.

There was no estimate of damage costs yet, said Syracuse Parks Commissioner Julie LaFave. The damage was done on four greens - at holes 3, 4, 6 and 7, she said.

She said the course, off of Coleridge Avenue in the city’s Tipperary Hill area, remains open for play while the damaged greens are repaired. The 9-hole course, built in 1901, is one of two city park courses in Syracuse. The other is the 9-hole layout at Sunnycrest Park in the city’s Eastwood neighborhood.

City police are asking anyone with information about the damage at Burnet Park, or who observes illegal activity by dirt bike or ATV riders, to call them at 315-442-5200.
