Despite a couple upsets in the early rounds of the NFL playoffs, the matchup between the 49ers and Chiefs in Super Bowl 54 on Sunday is a meeting of heavyweights.
Kansas City reached the AFC championship game last year in quarterback Patrick Mahomes' first full season under center, and it brought back most of its roster this campaign. So, there was little surprise that the team's high-octane offense went one step further this time around, earning a chance to claim its first championship since 1969.
San Francisco was not playoff team last year in part because quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL before it could hit its stride, and because its defense had not yet fully developed. With Garoppolo healthy in 2019 and rookie pass rusher Nick Bosa in the mix, the 49ers were the class of the NFC, paralyzing the Vikings and Packers en route to the Super Bowl.
