The Mississippi State baseball team suffered its first loss of the season in the series finale against Oregon State on Sunday afternoon.
The Beavers (3-4) used a big eighth inning to break away with a 7-2 road win to avoid the sweep. Oregon State scored four runs in the inning to break a 2-2 tie before scoring another run in the ninth inning.
Oregon State left-hander Cooper Hjerpe (1-1) earned the win on the hill. It was a busy weekend for the reliever, who also suffered his first loss of the year in game one against Mississippi State (5-1) on Friday. Bulldog reliever Jared Shemper received the loss.
Mississippi State returns to the diamond on Feb. 25 to host Texas Southern for a midweek non-conference matchup.
First inning
Oregon State leadoff man Micah McDowell walked before advancing to second and third base on wild pitches. After walking Ryan Ober, Mississippi State right-hander Eric Cerantola struck out back-to-back Beavers at the plate to escape the top half with two Oregon State runners on base.

Mississippi State left-hander Jared Shemper takes the mound to relieve Self. Oregon State ultimately left two runners on base.

Alex McGarry single to shortstop scored Andy Armstrong and loaded the bases for Oregon State. Right-hander Jaxon Forrester came on the mound to relieve Shemper. Ryan Ober then popped a sacrifice fly to right field to score Richie Mascareñas. Troy Claunch hit a two-RBI double into center field before Jake Dukart grounded out to end the big half inning for the Beavers.
