The Jamestown High School gymnastics team posted a second-place team finish the opening day of the state gymnastics meet. The Blue Jays recorded a score of 145.1 -- the highest team score in program history.
"We did what we were capable of," Blue Jay head coach Dave Tews said. "It's not like it was any surprise that we did that well or that we are capable of doing that well, but it went very, very well. We're really proud of the kids. They did great."
The second-place finish was Tews' highest as Blue Jay head gymnastics coach. The Blue Jays captured state titles in 1969 and 1970 and were named runner-up in 1971. Dickinson captured its fifth straight title with a score of 148.967.
"We were in second place a couple of other times (in the past) but another team snuck in ahead of us," Tews said. "This time we built a lead and we were able to expand it in the last rotation. We had an 8/10ths lead going into the rotation and then we put another four points in there so that was good."

Jamestown started out hot in the first rotation with 2019 defending uneven bars champion Rachel Schiele sticking a 9.067 on vault. The junior was followed closely by seventh-grader Julia Skari who blocked her way to a score of 9.017. Schiele held the team's second-highest score on bars with a 9.167, while Haley Nelson swung to a 9.283.
The Blue Jays had some bobbles on their final rotation last Friday at the West Region meet held at Jerry Meyer Arena. The Jays posted a 32.6 on beam at the WDA meet and when asked if the beam posed any problems to the team, Tews chuckled and said 'I would say: No.'
The team flipped to a 36.35 finish on the four-inch-wide apparatus outscoring performances on bars by 0.53 points and vault by 1.1. Schiele and Nelson, the defending state beam champ, tallied the team's top two scores at 9.517 and 9.483. The duo was joined by Skari (8.567) and Emma Hillerud (8.483) to round out the counted scores.
"It's kind of hard to judge how good we can be because we've never had that all-around successful day," Tews said. "We were well over 36 on beam today and that was huge. I can't even remember a score that big on beam. The kids did really, really well."
The team ended the night on a high note, having five gymnasts with scores of 9.183 or better. Nelson (9.483) and Schiele (9.467) headed up the final rotation while Skari ended her first state team contest with a 9.45. Brenna Hatch rounded out the top-four with 9.183. The team finished with 37.653.
It was a great finish for the team but the weekend is not over.
Saturday marks the individual championship competition in which all 11 of the Blue Jays will be competing. The Blue Jays will send eight athletes to the vault, bars and beam and seven to the floor. Tews said he is hopeful the standout team performance contributes to an intense -- but relaxed -- group of Blue Jays.
"You could see how tense they were," Tews said of day one. "Hopefully the kids can just relax and have some fun tomorrow."
