OXFORD – Ole Miss entered the Xavier series with the intention to pitch better than it did in the first four games of the season.
Mission accomplished.
The Ole Miss starting pitchers gave strong performances in all three games, and the bullpen shut down the Musketeers as well.
On Sunday, freshman pitcher Derek Diamond had his turn to shine, and he allowed just one run and struck out a career-high six in five innings. The Rebels scored eight runs in the fifth inning, and notched a 13-3 victory in eight innings at Swayze Field.
The Rebels had allowed nearly seven runs per game in their first four outings, including a season-high eight against Alcorn State.
Ole Miss (6-1) only allowed three runs and eight hits in the entire series against the Musketeers (2-4).
"There's times where you get streaky and you really pitch it well," Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said. "And certainly we did this weekend."
The Rebels, ranked No. 15 in the country by Baseball America, outscored the Musketeers 35-3 in the three-game series, extending their winning streak to six games.
"We were pretty sharp in all three phases three games in a row," Bianco said.
