Bayern Munich vs. Chelsea score, Champions League highlights: German giants blow past Blues in second half - CBSSports.com

Chelsea and Bayern Munich's round of 16 Champions League first leg wasn't so much a tale of two halves as it was the first half serving as a preview for what was to come. Following a quiet, but threatening opening 45 minutes, the German giants opened the flood gates after halftime to take home a 3-0 victory from Stamford Bridge, all but cementing a spot in the quarterfinals.

Two household names got the threats going for Bayern in the first half, with Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski getting excellent opportunities to score. But either Willy Caballero or the woodwork got in their way. Chelsea wasn't exactly lifeless in the first half and answered Bayern's missed opportunities with chances on the break to at least test Manuel Neuer.

The Blues nearly had a dream start to the second half with an near-goal from Olivier Giroud, which was set up by Jorginho's back-flick. Bayern's David Alaba was there to prevent the ball from reaching the back of the net, but the message was sent.

At that point, Bayern decided to punch back harder than the team had all game. Off the efforts of a youngster who clearly has an affinity for scoring in London, the Germans took a quick 2-0 lead over their opponents. Serge Gnabry, who had scored four goals against Tottenham in October, notched his first goal thanks to a pinpoint pass from Lewandowski.

Just two minutes later, it was Gnabry again slotting one past Chelsea's keeper, with the Polish forward getting the assist once again.

Frank Lampard's side did try to battle back from the two-goal deficit. At one point, the Blues forced a critical error from Joshua Kimmich that nearly gave Mason Mount a chance to put Chelsea on the board. But poor decision making from the English lad saw the ball head toward the sky instead of the back of the net.

Chelsea had one more chance to score, with a dangerous cross from Willian nearly finding a teammate, before Bayern took control for good. In the 76th minute, Canadian teenager Alphonso Davies ran past nearly all of Chelsea's defense and found the German side's go-to man in the middle, Lewandowski, to bring the lead to three.

Were there other attempts from Chelsea to try and save face from this embarrassing loss? Yes, but none of them were worth writing home about.

This victory for Bayern is the first time the Bundesliga squad has won at Chelsea, as well as the first time Chelsea has lost at home to a German team in the competition. It's a horrible start to the tie for Lampard's team. Chelsea will try to dig its way out of the hole in Munich on March 18 for the second leg.
