Entering Sunday, the DC Defenders were considered one of the best teams in the league. They were 2-0 and supposedly had one of the best defenses and quarterbacks in the league, but Sunday was a different story. The previously winless Los Angeles Wildcats dominated all three phases of the game from beginning to end, as they secured a 39-9 upset victory in front of their home fans.
Quarterback Josh Johnson completed 18 of 25 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns, while Martez Carter rushed for 34 yards, two touchdowns and also caught a touchdown pass. While Nelson Spruce entered this weekend as the top receiver in the league, Sunday was about Tre McBride. The former second-round pick of the Defenders caught five passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns in his revenge game. As for the Defenders, Week 3 was an absolute nightmare. Cardale Jones completed 13 of 26 passes for 103 yards and four interceptions, and DC struggled to get anything going all game on offense. The Defenders' first touchdown came late in the fourth quarter, when Nick Brossette broke free for a 38-yard score. It was a brutal beatdown from beginning to end, and it's clear that we are still trying to figure out these new XFL teams.
Earlier on Sunday, professional football's return to St. Louis was successful, as the BattleHawks beat down the New York Guardians, 29-9. The BattleHawks kept the ball on the ground for the majority of the game, and Matt Jones finished with 95 rushing yards and a touchdown on 15 carries while Christine Michael rushed for 44 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. The Guardians struggled mightily once again this week, and coach Kevin Gilbride actually used three different quarterbacks. The third, Luis Perez, entered the game in the fourth quarter and led the Guardians to their only touchdown of the game -- an eight-yard catch by Austin Duke.
