Wolves Score Thrilling Overtime Win Over #7 Seattle Pacific - WOU Athletics

MONMOUTH, Ore. – It felt like 2019 all over again. Two years ago, the Western Oregon University women's soccer team snapped a 17-year drought against Seattle Pacific when the Wolves picked up the 2-0 victory that year. Fast forward to 2021 and with Seattle Pacific ranked seventh in the nation, WOU did it again, this time in overtime claiming the 1-0 win over the Falcons in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on a rainy Thursday afternoon at the WOU Soccer Field.

"First off, I am so proud of our team effort today. SPU is one of the best teams in the country and it's always great to play them," head coach Kacey Bingham said. "We have known from day one how talented our team is, but have been struggling to get the results. All the pieces came together today for us. Our defense was remarkable today and we never stopped pressing from top to bottom. We knew if we kept pressing hard and creating opportunities, we would get a goal."

That goal came in the first overtime after the Wolves (2-5-0, 1-2-0 GNAC) worked the ball up the field that led to the game-winner. Briana Kubli worked the ball up on the attack and after the ball was knocked out, Liz Parker took the throw. Parker found Chloe Smith who was able to secure the throw, turn and make a great pass in the box to Lilly Nowatzke who was able to just get a piece of it to knock it home for the winning goal in the 96th minute.

Early on, Seattle Pacific (5-1-0, 2-1-0 GNAC) had several chances through the first 10-20 minutes, but weren't able to get on the board. A hit post off a head shot in the fourth minute and then a pair of saves by Emily Wheeler kept the game scoreless.

The Wolves generated their first shot in the 22nd minute when Camille Darland took a free kick and fired it towards the upper part of the net that was saved by Riley Travis.

Over the final 10 minutes of the half, WOU started to take control getting shots from Erika Gonzalez Moreno, Piper Matson, Kubli and Nowatzke, but weren't able to land a goal sending the game to halftime scoreless. Each team had six shots through the first half.

It took until midway through the second half for either team to mount a real good scoring threat. In the 71st minute, Claire Neder took a shot for the Falcons that was saved by Wheeler. Wheeler made another save a few minutes later on a shot by Ibale Madison.

Smith had a strong look for the Wolves in the 77th minute, but the shot was saved by Travis. Smith had another chance in the 83rd minute that was also saved. Over the final minutes of regulation, SPU tallied a couple more shots that missed the net sending the game to overtime. SPU held a 10-7 edge on shots in the second half.

In overtime, there ended up being just one shot that turned out to be the game-winner. A couple minutes into the OT, the Falcons had a chance that was whistled offside. Then just over three minutes later, Nowatzke netted the game-winner.

Overall for the game, SPU held a 16-14 advantage in shots, while WOU held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. The Falcons had a 8-1 advantage on corner kicks and the game featured 35 fouls, 20 whistled on the Wolves.

Hannah Rispler, Jada Foster, Parker, Gonzalez Moreno and Darland played all 95-plus minutes for the Wolves. Nowatzke tallied three shots, while Matson, Smith and Kubli all had two shots apiece. In goal, Wheeler played all 95-plus minutes and came up with four saves.

Makena Rietz led the Falcons with three shots. In goal, Travis played all 95-plus minutes and also made four saves.

Following the big home win over Seattle Pacific, the Wolves will remain at home to face Montana State Billings this Saturday morning starting at 11 a.m. at the WOU Soccer Field. Saint Martin's defeated the Yellowjackets 2-0 earlier on Thursday.
