Eagles Score Early, Hold On Late to Defeat Jacksonville State - FGCU Athletics

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Two early goals from junior Alyssa Abbondandolo proved to be enough for the FGCU women's soccer team as they took down Jacksonville State, 2-1, Thursday evening to improve to 6-5 overall and 3-0 in the ASUN.

Abbondandolo (Cape Coral, Fla./Oasis HS) scored in the fifth minute before converting a penalty kick in the 14th minute for her second and third goals of the season.

"Fantastic result tonight," said head coach Jim Blankenship "I thought we played some great soccer and continue to get better. We beat a good team tonight."

The Eagles outshot Jacksonville State (5-6-1, 1-2 ASUN), 26-4, with a 10-2 advantage on shots on goal. FGCU also took seven corner kicks while allowing just two.

Junior Ashlee Brentlinger (Middletown, Del./Padua Academy) and freshman Olivia Lindstedt (Gluumslov, Sweden/Malmo Idrottsgymnasium) each picked up assists on Abbondandolo's first goal. For Lindstedt, she is now tied for the team lead with two assists.

Sophmore Leah Scarpelli (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial HS/Penn State) led FGCU with seven shots, followed by sophomore Louise Lillback (Stockholm, Sweden/Tibble Gymnasium) with five.

Cephana Deane led the Gamecocks with two shots while Morgan Lerch made eight saves in goal.

The Eagles got on the board early as Brentlinger and Lindstedt executed a nice give-and-go before Brentlinger found Abbondandolo open in the box, who fired the ball into the back of the net.

In the 14th minute, Abbondandolo got past her defender and into the box, but was taken down before she got a shot off, earning the penalty. She stepped up to the penalty spot and calmly scored to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles had additional solid chances to score in the game, but couldn't convert. The closest they came occurred in the 38th minute when Scarpelli hit the crossbar on a free kick from just outside the box. At the half, the Eagles held a 12-0 advantage in shots.

Jacksonville State broke the shutout in the 85th minute and had a chance to tie the game with a corner in the final 30 seconds, but they could not convert.

FGCU will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Florence to battle North Alabama. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
