The Ducks beat the buzzer to cap the 2021 Rookie Faceoff with a dramatic 5-4 win over the Arizona Coyotes.
The Ducks completed the Rookie Faceoff with a 2-0-1 record, best among the six participating clubs, to improve to 11-0-2 its last 13 rookie tournament games since 2016.
The teams traded power-play goals in the first period with Anaheim converting a pair of extra man opportunities to carry a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Olen Zellweger opened the scoring with a long wrist shot from just inside the blue line. The 2021 second-round pick collected points in each of Anaheim's three Rookie Faceoff contests.
After Arizona evened the score, Max Golod put Anaheim ahead again, winning the race to a loose puck in front of the net for his first goal of the tournament.
The Coyotes continued the special teams seesaw in the second period with a shorthanded goal.
Zellweger and Alex Limoges combined for a 4-on-4 goal midway through the middle frame, giving Anaheim a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.
Anaheim could not protect the third period advantage. Despite a Bryce Kindopp goal to restablish a one-goal edge with seven minutes to play in regulation, Arizona leveled the score for the fourth time, seemingly forcing Anaheim to overtime for the second straight day.
Much like they did Sunday night though, scoring twice in the game's final moments to tie the score, Anaheim's youngsters kept pushing. Limoges and Sasha Pastujov created an offensive zone takeaway and got the puck to the front of the net where rookie camp invite Logan Nijhoff did the rest, winning the race to the puck and beating the buzzer to secure the win for the Ducks.
Gage Alexander and Roman Durny split the afternoon in net for Anaheim.
Anaheim will open 2021 Training Camp presented by FRESH N' LEAN on Thursday at Great Park Ice.
