DETROIT -- It hasn’t been an ideal start for Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham. But the rookie guard is “on course” in his recovery after he injured his ankle in the first week of training camp and missed the entire preseason.
Cunningham has not been a full participant at practice since the first week of the Pistons’ training camp after injuring his ankle. The team has said that the injury is minor, but they wanted to take a cautious approach in the rookie’s recovery.
“He’s on course,” head coach Dwane Casey said after Sunday’s practice. “He’s working. We’re all on the same page with his people and with Cade.”
Though Cunningham has shown some positive steps toward his return, Casey has said that he wants Cunningham to have two to three practices behind him before the team inserts the top overall pick into the lineup.
“He’s on course, we’re gonna wait,” Casey said. “We’re gonna hold out. Hold out hope but again he’s on course. One thing, we’re not going to do, if he’s not 100%, we’re not going to rush him back out there wait and he gets re-injured and be off more time. But we’ll see where everyone is by Wednesday, and make that proclamation come Wednesday.”
Cunningham has been limited over the last few weeks in practice but has participated in team shooting drills. On Sunday, reporters briefly saw Cunningham in the gym during the portion of practice that media members were able to see.
The Pistons have been bitten by the injury bug throughout the offseason and were left shorthanded ahead of their third preseason game against the New York. Now, some of those players could be available for Wednesday’s season opener.
Detroit missed the presence of Saddiq Bey (ankle) and Killian Hayes (concussion) in the final two exhibition games. The two practiced on Sunday. Bey participated in just some of practice, hopping in and out drills, while Hayes was a full participant.
“We’ll see,” Casey said. “Let’s take the next couple of days for all our guys that are injured and see where they are and see how they go and how they react.”
The Pistons host the Chicago Bulls at Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday (7 p.m., Bally Sports Detroit), before facing the Bulls at the United Center (8 p.m., Bally Sports Detroit) on Saturday in Chicago.
