Ivan Nova hit hard in final Tigers’ intrasquad: Box score - MLive.com

DETROIT -- There were no handshakes or hugs or high fives after the game. That would be against the rules, after all.

But coaches ended the Detroit Tigers’ 10th intrasquad game in the middle of the seventh inning Monday afternoon at Comerica Park, it marked the end of Summer Camp, 2020.

If the world returns to normal in 2021, it will never be repeated.

But that’s not to say the last three weeks were a drag. In fact, manager Ron Gardenhire said, it was quite productive.

“I think we did as good as we could possibly do with the situation we were in,” Gardenhire said. “You’ve got one field and 60 guys. I think it started off a little slow and then we got a better feel for how this was going and what we could do and couldn’t do. I think everybody got their work in. These guys are ready to go play, ready to start this thing.”

First, the good news: The Tigers finished the 10-game slate 9-0 with one tie. The bad news? The Tigers also went 0-9. With one tie.

Over 10 games, Tigers’ hitters came to the plate 570 times. They had 36 doubles, four triples and 17 home runs. They batted .254 with a .311 on-base percentage and a .436 slugging percentage (.746 OPS). They struck out 119 times against 40 walks.

The pitchers finished with a 4.42 ERA in 134 innings of work.

That wasn’t helped by a rough final outing by Monday’s starting pitcher, Ivan Nova, who allowed eight runs on 11 hits.

But Gardenhire was unconcerned. Nova will start in Game 2 of the regular season in five days.

“Nova got his work in,” he said. “I talked to (catcher Austin) Romine about it. He couldn’t get his breaking ball over. His curveball is a big pitch for him and he really didn’t have a great feel for it today. It’s just getting your work in and getting your pitch count up so we can go to the post. He did that. That’s what we’re more concerned about, getting his innings up and his legs underneath him. He’s a big, strong guy. He’s ready to go.”

Two young Tigers pitchers from LSU -- Alex Lange and Zack Hess -- made their intrasquad debuts in back-to-back scoreless innings. Both pumped mid-90s fastballs. After the game, they departed for Toledo where they’ll continue to work for the rest of the season.

“We saw 95, 96 (mph). That was fun,” Gardehire said. “They were overthrowing a little bit and we were just hoping that we didn’t get anybody killed, because they were pretty amped up. But they actually did really well. The ball comes out of their hand really good and I think if you were looking at the scoreboard and saw the velo, it was pretty good. The guys said the ball was jumping.”
