The Guardians, Defenders, Vipers and Dragons will all take the field Saturday as Week 2 of the XFL is here.
New York and D.C. will be looking to move to 2-0 as their teams face each other in the first game of the day. Meanwhile the Vipers and Dragons will be looking to avoid an 0-2 start in a 10-game season. The Vipers were considered in Vegas as one of the betting favorites, but they scored just three points in Week 1 in a lousy effort.
Tampa Bay QB Aaron Murray will be inactive today, which may turn out to be a good thing. He played poorly in Week 1 and fans were hoping for backup Quinton Flowers to get more reps on offense. We'll see how effective Flowers can be in Week 2 as he'll likely see more snaps.
As for the first game, New York had an impressive defensive showing in Week 1, but this week will be a real test. The Guardians go up against Cardale Jones and the high-powered Defenders offense. This battle between 1-0 teams should be a fun one, and an exciting way to kick off the second week of the XFL.
We'll be providing live highlights and stats from the pair of Saturday games below.
XFL COVERAGE:
Tampa Bay Vipers at Seattle Dragons live updates, highlights
5:09 p.m.: The Vipers follow in last week's footsteps and struggle on offense, failing to score on their opening drive.
New York Guardians at D.C. Defenders score, highlights
Final: Defenders 27, Guardians 0
Recap: This game was not even close, as you can probably tell from the final score. The Guardians were awful on offense as starting quarterback Matt McGloin couldn't move the ball down field. He was eventually benched in the fourth quarter, finishing his day completing 8-of-19 passes for 44 yards with no touchdowns and an interception (one of which was returned for a touchdown). Marquise Williams replaced him and finished with more passing yards (51) despite significantly less playing time. He even added 16 yards on the ground. Cardale Jones played well, finishing 23-of-37 for 276 yards and two touchdowns. Receiver De’Andre Thompkins returned from injury and was a big boost on offense, finishing 6-92-1 on nine targets. The Defenders move to 2-0 and take control of first place in the East Division.
4:41 p.m.: The Defenders had the game in control, but decided to score a touchdown anyways, going up 27-0. And because there's no sportsmanship in the XFL, they decided to go for a three-point attempt after scoring. It ended up not working, though.
4:24 p.m.: The Guardians took Matt McGloin's advice and changed their offensive game plan ... because McGloin has been benched. Marquise Williams has entered the game at QB for New York as McGloin was unable to move the ball downfield. We'll see if Williams is able to cut into this 21-0 deficit.
4:20 p.m.: Defenders 21, Guardians 0. Once again the Defenders were able move the ball into the redzone. But D.C. was unable to score a touchdown. Instead, the Defenders had to settle for their third field goal of the game.
4:16 p.m.: We finally got to witness a double forward pass in the XFL.
4:00 p.m.: The Guardians get their first big break of the game. The Defenders moved the ball into the redzone, but Cardale Jones threw the ball up for grabs and a New York defender came down with it. Still, it's a long road back from being down 18-0, and New York's offense hasn't done much all game.
3:45 p.m.: Well if the Guardians did have a new game plan, it wasn't a good one. Matt McGloin threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown on New York's first offensive possession of the second half. The Defenders again failed on their PAT so they now lead 18-0. It's been a tough game for McGloin as he's completed five passes to his own team and two to the opposing team on 15 attempts.
Halftime: Defenders 12, Guardians 0
The Defenders have dominated this game so far.
The Guardians have only picked up two first downs in the entire half, with an ugly passing display. Quarterback Matt McGloin was visibly frustrated as he said during a halftime interview his team needs to change their "entire game plan." He was 5-of-14 for 32 yards with no touchdowns and an interception in the first half. The Defenders haven't been too strong on offense, but they've done enough to build a double possession lead. The Defenders have out-gained the Guardians 196-68 at half.
3:20 p.m.: The Defenders add another field goal, going up 12-0. This game has been completely one-sided so far.
2:51 p.m.: D.C.'s defense has shown up for the second straight game. In Week 1 the Defenders forced three turnovers, and in Week 2 they've already forced two as Matt Elam gets an interception off of Matt McGloin.
2:49 p.m.: Defenders add a field goal to their score, going up 9-0 over the Guardians.
2:32 p.m.: The Defenders keep on defending. D.C. forces a fumble on the Guardians' following possession. After the play was over, there was a bit of drama resulting in unsportsmanlike penalties.
2:25 p.m.: The Defenders score first, going up 6-0 (PAT attempt failed). Cardale Jones was able to find De’Andre Thompkins in the back of the endzone for a touchdown. Thompkins missed Week 1's game due to an injury, so it was quite a debut performance for the wideout. Eli Rogers did most of the work on the drive, catching three passes for 50 yards.
2:15 p.m.: Defenders receiver Eli Rogers is playing with a heavy heart today.
2:05 p.m.: The Defenders traded for pass-rusher Anthony Johnson on Friday, and he's already expected to play today for D.C.
