LOS ANGELES >>> Due to a last-minute lineup change, Emma Andres had less than four minutes to mentally prepare. She had been training all season and she knew she could do it. But this was different. For the first time, she’d be debuting her floor routine in competition.

“I was just so excited,” she said. “All I was thinking was to calm myself down, and do what we practice in the gym and trust myself.”

Any butterflies in her stomach had turned to smiles as she scored a 9.875 in the event and was embraced by her teammates. The walk-on freshman’s score tied for second-best on the floor overall. Andres didn’t find out until a couple hours before the meet that she’d even be competing at all as she also made her debut in the Bruins’ opening event on vault.

“That’s a very big mindset change for a freshman because they’ve spent the previous 10 years [of club gymnastics] knowing two months in advance, they’re going to do all these meets with all four events,” UCLA head coach Chris Waller said. “It’s very different.”

A week after suffering their worst loss of season, the No. 5 Bruins (7-2) returned to Pauley Pavilion on Sunday afternoon and earned their highest team score of the season in a 197.675-195.375 defeat of No. 20 Arizona. While UCLA saw a season-high team performance on beam, on top of Andres’ addition to the lineup on both vault and floor, Waller believes his team was just competing as they would in an everyday, normal practice.

“This is the performance that we do in practice,” he said. “We just went out there and did normal for us. I didn’t think we executed what we practiced, so I think that will build confidence knowing that what we’re doing in practice is going to be much better.”

Last week, UCLA had three falls in its beam rotation which ultimately lost the meet against Washington. However, by focusing on the “why not” aspect of competing, UCLA found its groove again. Highlighted by a career-high 9.900 from Kendal Poston and a season-high from Felicia Hano (9.800), the Bruins put up a season-high score of 49.375 in the event.

“We’re a really good beam team, so what I was thinking up there was, ‘There is no reason why I can’t just hit a great routine,” Poston, who was one three Bruins to step off the beam last week, said. “Even in my series, it was by-far not the best series, but in the air, I was like, ‘There is no reason I can’t stay on this beam.’”

The Bruins defeated Arizona (4-4) in every event, including a meet-high 49.500 on the floor thanks to Andres and a season-high 9.950 from Hano. Ross won the all-around competition with a final score of 39.70. Hano, who competed in all four events for the first time this season, finished with an all-around score of 39.475. Arizona did not have any all-around competitors.

The Bruins travel to Tempe, Arizona next weekend to take on Arizona State on Saturday at 2 p.m. UCLA will return to Pauley to next face No. 3 Utah on Feb. 23.
