Kentucky’s weekend down in Auburn was spoiled by rather disappointing performances from this season’s star Nick Richards, as well as the officials calling the game.
From a pure entertainment perspective, 44 free throws for Auburn was just nauseating.
On Tuesday, while the Kentucky Wildcats’ offense continued to struggle a bit, their defense (without fouling) was more crisp against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
The Wildcats took a 31-23 lead at halftime, playing the first 20 minutes and committing just three total fouls. EJ Montgomery was the surprise aggressor early, leading his team with seven first half points.
Though sophomore forward continued with his up-beat energy throughout the second half, his front-court running mate Nick Richards was the star of the show. Richards led the Wildcats for the entire second half en route to a bounce-back victory, 80-72.
It’s interesting what a team can do when their opponent doesn’t shoot 44 free throws, but the Wildcats’ poise at both ends of the floor was also considerably noticeable in their winning effort.
Kentucky’s season continues to be a bit of a roller-coaster ride, but winning games never gets old. The Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday when they travel down to Knoxville, TN for their first of two matchups against the Tennessee Volunteers this season.
While EJ Montgomery’s energy throughout the game was unmatched, the favorite for Southeastern Conference Player of the Year Nick Richards was the best player on the hardwood during Tuesday evening’s showdown.
Though he somewhat struggled to get going in the first half, Richards dominated around the basket in the second period to finish with a double-double of 27 points (7-10 shooting) and 12 rebounds while making a whopping 13-15 free throw attempts. Richards further made his case as the conference’s most dominant player as well as improving his draft stock for this spring.
But, most importantly, Richards is the multi-year success story all of Big Blue Nation has been waiting for.
