No. 21 Iowa lost starting guard CJ Fredrick to an ankle injury and lost the game to Indiana, 89-77, Thursday night at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind.
Fredrick planted his foot wrong while catching the ball near the sideline and exited the game with 5:24 left in the first half. He did not return.
Indiana led 49-34 at halftime and Iowa only got as close as 10 in the second half.
The Hawkeyes fell to 17-8 overall and 8-6 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers, who snapped a four-game losing streak, are now 16-8 and 6-7.
» Box score: Indiana 89, No. 21 Iowa 77
» Reaction: Road is rocky for Hawkeyes yet again
Point spread: Indiana (-1.5) covered
Over/under: Over (148)
Turning point: Like in last Wednesday's 104-68 loss at Purdue, a prolonged first-half scoring drought hurt Iowa badly here. This one was less severe, but down 19-16 after a Luka Garza 3 with 12:59 remaining in the half, the Hawkeyes didn't score again for 3:23 as IU went on a 12-0 run. Iowa didn't connect on a field goal until Bakari Evelyn's layup with 8:03 left in the half made it 34-20. Fredrick picked up his injury a few minutes later.
MVP: Devonte Green entered the game hitting just 30.4 percent of his 3-point attempts in conference play, but buried his first four here, including three during a 2 1/2-minute stretch midway through the first half. He scored 18 of his 27 points in the first half, hitting 5 of 8 shots from distance (7 of 11 for the game). Garza, meanwhile, did all he could for Iowa, totaling 38 points on 14-for-22 shooting, eight rebounds and four blocks in 40 minutes.
Key stat: 45-16. Iowa's lack of depth was on display. The Hawkeyes, of course, were already without Jordan Bohannon and Jack Nunge due to injury and Patrick McCaffery due to illness. Then Cordell Pemsl was suspended after being arrested Monday for driving with a revoked license. Riley Till and Austin Ash both played, but the Hawkeyes' main rotation was limited to seven players and their bench was outscored 45-16. Green did a lot of that work for the Hoosiers, who also got a career-high-tying 10 points from Race Thompson.
Stat leaders:
Points — Luka Garza, Iowa (38); Devonte Green, Indiana (27)
Rebounds — Luka Garza, Iowa (8); Trayce Jackson-Davis, Indiana (10)
Assists — Joe Toussaint, Iowa (5); Rob Phinisee, Indiana (5)
Steals — Austin Ash, Iowa (2); Race Thompson, Indiana (4)
Blocks — Luka Garza, Iowa (4); Trayce Jackson-Davis, Race Thompson, Indiana (2)
