Gymnastics hits best score of season over Mandan - The Dickinson Press

The Midgets blew past the Braves with a team score of 150-128, the best score the Midgets recorded combined as a team all season. With the regular season vastly coming to a close, Dickinson proved not only that they’re ready for the playoffs, but also they’re ready to use the home gym advantage with the state tournament taking place in Dickinson.

“I think we’re peaking, which is a really good time to be peaking,” head coach Kent Van Ellis said. “They’re stronger, they’re more confident than they have been through the season and it’s very good to see, I’m excited about it.”

The Midgets controlled the top five placements in the vault, bars, beam, floor exercise and the all-around. Senior Ayanna Fossum placed first in four out of the five, only placing second in the bars with a score of 9.350, Amy Fridley placed first with a score of 9.375. Fossum finished with an all-around score of 38.125, followed by Fridley at second with a score of 37.300.

For Fossum, she has learned what is needed to be a successful leader as the season nears its end and the matches become more important.

“The way I kinda lead them is always having a positive attitude, always trying to tell them how to have fun and just smile and just have fun with it and have a good time,” she said. “That keeps our spirits lifted and that always helps us do better.”

For Fossum and Brinklyn Schumacher, the two seniors, the reality that the season is coming to an end is quickly becoming a reality, especially while celebrating senior night with a solid victory over the Braves.

“It’s very bitter sweet knowing that it’s coming to an end, I just feel like it hasn’t even hit me. But, I feel like I know I only have three meets left so I just have lots of drive left,” Fossum said. “Three more meets and I know I got to give them my all.”

Dickinson has been at the top of the gymnastics in the state of North Dakota for the past four seasons, and with a solid victory on Saturday in which the team gave a stellar effort, they look to be on top for the fifth-straight year.

For Van Ellis, he emphasized how the team has been fortunate to have strong health throughout the course of the season and emphasized the importance of practicing.

“We haven’t had any serious, physical concerns with any of the girls (this season,)” he said. “Aches and pains here and there, but it’s always nice to come into practice and they can do their bits and be consistent with them. It’s just that practice has been so good for them and they’re able to (practice) every day.”
