College men's hockey: Bulldogs continue to strike first, score 3-2 win over Omaha - Duluth News Tribune

The Bulldogs struck first again at Amsoil Arena on Friday night before a crowd of 6,194 en route to a third-straight victory, topping Nebraska-Omaha 3-2 in the opener of a two-game NCHC series. Game 2 is at 7:07 p.m. Saturday in Duluth.

“It’s been huge for us all year. Starts are something we always key off of,” said UMD junior wing Kobe Roth. “It seems when we have slow starts, they score first and we’re chasing the whole game. It completely changes the outlook of the game. Even that first shift, if we have a good first shift, it seems like games are going our way. That first goal is huge.”

UMD took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission via goals by Roth and freshman wing Quinn Olson. Sophomore wing Noah Cates scored the deciding goal later in the third.

Roth tallied his 12th goal of the season — briefly tying Cates for the team-high — 13 minutes into the first period off a feed in front by sophomore wing Tanner Laderoute.

It was the culmination of an offensive onslaught that began on the previous shift when Noah Cates, Jackson Cates, Nick Swaney, Matt Anderson and Louie Roehl were bombarding the Mavericks.

“Cates’ line the shift before really wore them down,” Roth said. “They had a really good shift, they had a lot of chances. We got out there and just tried to keep the momentum going.

“I just cycled it down to Tanner and it was just a great play by Tanner. He fed me another little tap in there, which is nice. Good play by him.”

Olson put the Bulldogs back on top seven-plus minutes into the second, taking a long-range pass on the power play from sophomore wing Cole Koepke at the Mavericks’ blue line before ripping a shot off just inside the faceoff circle.

Cates reclaimed the Bulldogs’ goal scoring crown midway through the third period to make it 3-1 UMD, nabbing his 13th goal of the season by driving the net for a backhander after his older brother, Jackson, won an ugly faceoff in the Omaha zone.

“(The puck) was kind of behind their defenseman and their center. I just got in there, spun off the D and took it to the net. My backhander snuck in,” Noah Cates said. “It was kind of a broken play and I just won a battle.”

Omaha tied the game at 1-1 less than two-minutes into the second period after senior defenseman Nick Wolff was called for indirect contact to the head-elbowing just six seconds into the period. Mavericks sophomore center Chayse Primeau was able to knock a puck past UMD goalie Hunter Shepard to knot the game at 1-1.

The Mavericks pulled within a goal with six and a half minutes to play in regulation to put pressure on UMD as senior center Teemu Pulkkinen was able to score on a chance out front.

“I thought our third period wasn’t our best. Give them credit. They’re not going to quit, they’re not going to go away,” Sandelin said. “Noah’s goal was great. Just win a puck battle and take the puck to the net.

“We had some opportunities that we got to bear down on. Clean up some things and we got to be better tomorrow.”

The No. 2 power play in the nation at 28 percent going into this weekend’s series, the Bulldogs finished Friday’s game 1-for-6 on the man advantage, failing to score on a minute-plus 5-on-3 advantage midway through the second period.

Shepard finished with 24 saves in his NCAA-record 108th consecutive start.

Omaha freshman goaltender Isaiah Saville, who played for Sandelin on the U.S. National Junior Team at the 2020 World Junior Championship, finished with 38 saves.
