Blue Jays soar to season-high team score - Jamestown Sun

The Blue Jay junior backed up her state-leading 9.7 with an event-winning 9.65 on the floor during the annual Blue Jay Throwback Meet at the Jamestown Gymnastics Club. Schiele has garnered state titles on both the beam (2017) and bars (2019) in the past and looks poised to possibly add to her collection.

"Maybe," smiled the standout Blue Jay, appearing as if she didn't want to jinx anything. "That's what I'm aiming for, I guess. I just want to go out there and do my best for the team."

Jamestown reached a new 2020 high-water mark hosting Valley City and Grand Forks, cruising to victory with a season-high score of 144.50. The Hi-Liners finished close behind at 141.90 with the Knight Riders in third at 131.40.

Schiele held off VC's Karina Olson (9.6) to win the floor, while a healthy Haley Nelson won the all-around (36.85) with season highs on floor (9.5), bars (9.35), beam (9.0) and vault (9.0). Nelson won the uneven bars competition and appears closer to full strength following ankle surgery in the fall.

The sophomore is the defending state beam champion.

"Haley's back, which is a really big boost for our team, but Courtney's out which is really heartbreaking," said Schiele, referring to Blue Jay senior Courtney Mack. "She's trying to get back into it and we could use her as much as we possibly could."

Mack was in full-support mode Saturday, providing what positive energy she could. The senior said she fractured the tibia in her left leg practicing at an open gym over Christmas break.

"I get an X-ray on Monday to see how it's healing," Mack said. "They told me six to eight weeks, which would be around the week of WDA and state.

"My goal is to come back as much as I can, and, hopefully, be competing in everything, but I don't know yet."

In the meantime, all Mack can do is be there.

"It's hard," she said. "I do as much as I can to help them do better."

JHS coach Dave Tews was pleased with the Jays' team score and the resurgence of Nelson. Nelson performed vault for the first time this season.

"We only had her do one vault because it was the last event and we knew her score was going to be fine," Tews said. "It's nice getting her back and hopefully we can continue to build now."

Tews was also impressed with freshmen Anabelle Cramer and Sydney Fisher, who both turned in solid performances and helped their respective state-qualifying averages. Cramer scored a third-place 9.05 on beam, while Fisher posted an 8.85 on floor.

"That really puts (Cramer) solid in the qualifying as of now, and we've been waiting for (Fisher) to kinda break out a little bit," Tews said. "Hopefully, those kids can keep generating some scores."

Jamestown will be taking six entries to the annual Kim Lupo Memorial Invitational on Friday, before hosting both the Jamestown Invite and the West Region meet on Feb. 13 and Feb. 21, respectively. The state gymnastics meet will be held Feb. 28-29 in Dickinson.

"Floor's going pretty well. Beam? I could probably use a little help," said Schiele, who placed sixth on beam Saturday with an 8.85. "I should probably stay on the beam more."
