WEST ROXBURY – BC High knew exactly where it wanted to be after a loss to Catholic Memorial three weeks ago.
And for the No. 7 Eagles, that was seated atop the Catholic Conference alongside the sixth-ranked Knights.
BC High made that possible Friday night, preventing CM from taking the title outright as a mixture of youth and veteran leadership propelled the Eagles to a share of the conference crown for a second straight year with a 79-74 victory at Ronald S. Perry Gymnasium.
Sophomore Mike Loughnane turned in a strong all-around performance with 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists while senior Ozzy Trapilo also served as a key catalyst by recording 17 points and 10 rebounds.
“To be a conference champ is something that these kids should be proud of,” said BC High coach Bill Loughnane. “Both teams knew what was at stake and I thought the kids rose to the occasion on both sides. … We were lucky that we had a few more shots fall.”
Behind the 6-foot-9, 275-pound Trapilo, who used his size to rack up numerous buckets in the paint, BC High (12-3) battled back from a nine-point deficit in the third quarter before the lead exchanged hands seven times over the final three minutes of the stanza.
Neither side could gain separation as CM (11-4) star junior guard Kurtis Henderson, who was silenced during the second and third quarters but still managed a game-high 22 points, hit a 3-pointer to level the score at 57-all less than two minutes into the final frame.
But the back-and-forth play ceased with the Eagles going on a game-altering 13-3 run to pull away. A deep 3-pointer from Mike Loughnane followed by a steal and conversion from Korey Reynolds energized the run as they both, along with Drew Martin, also added in successful jumpers to take a 70-60 lead with 2:41 left.
The Knights tried to mount a rally and got within four with 1:28 remaining, but Aidan Carroll registered a clutch put-back and Mike Loughnane went 6-for-7 from the free-throw line down the stretch to close it out.
Along with Loughnane and Trapilo, Reynolds (12 points), Martin (11 points) and Carroll (10 points) all delivered to give the Eagles five players in double figures in scoring.
“A lot of our younger kids have grown up this year,” Bill Loughnane said. “I don’t think the moment was too big for them, which was nice to see.”
Ta’Quan Williams (20 points) and Jack Wirtanen picked up the slack for CM with Henderson in early foul trouble as the duo combined to score all but four of CM’s 23 second-quarter points for a 39-33 halftime lead.
The Knights also shot the ball well from beyond the arc in spurts – CM finished 12-of-33 from downtown – but it wasn’t enough to keep the conference throne for themselves as BC High’s poise in the second half helped it get a piece of the title.
“It definitely means a lot,” Trapilo said. “Last season, ending on a Catholic Conference title, it’s nice.”
