Rennes vs. PSG live score, updates, highlights from Ligue 1 Matchday 9 - Sporting News

PSG's unbeaten run is over. Rennes handed the Parisian club its first loss of the season with a 2-0 home win that stopped PSG's season-opening winning streak at eight matches. PSG, which stays in first place in Ligue 1, started its four brightest attacking stars, but they couldn't make a difference on the day.

The Rennes goals came on either side of the halftime break. The first one on a fantastic finish by Gaetan Laborde came against the run of play just before the halftime whistle. Laborde then turned provider on the second-half kickoff, serving up a ball to an unmarked Flavien Tait and PSG couldn't muster a response.

PSG were bothered by the enthusiastic start by high-pressing Rennes, but eventually the visitors gained control of the match and Lionel Messi began pulling the strings. He combined well with Kylian Mbappe on a few occasions and also hit the crossbar on a free kick. But the finishing from PSG's forwards was off and they failed to break through.

More concerning for PSG fans is the lack of a reaction by the club and its stars after going down 2-0, their first two-goal deficit this season. Mbappe was the only player who played with any desire, while Messi faded and Neymar was subbed off with 15 minutes remaining. His substitute, Mauro Icardi didn't accomplish much in his cameo.

This was PSG's final match before the October international break for World Cup qualifiers. The next match for PSG will be at home against Angers on Sunday, Oct. 17.

Rennes vs. PSG updates & highlights

(All times Eastern)

Final: Rennes 2, PSG 0

91st min.: Messi with an attempt that is wide of the target and the head immediately goes down.

90th min.: Six minutes of stoppage time!

86th min.: Yellow card for Mbappe for an aggressive challenge in the corner on Assignon. Meanwhile, Ugochukwu subs on for Tait.

84th min.: And it must be said: Messi has been invisible in this second half outside of his set-piece effort. He's the player you need to step up when down 2-0. He didn't do it.

83rd min.: Replays show that Hakimi makes contact with the ball and not with Laborde's head. The referee is going to look at it at the monitor. No penalty. That's the right call.

82nd min.: Rennes penalty! Achraf Hakimi with the high boot on Gaetan Laborde in the box and the referee has pointed to the spot. But the referee is still talking to the VAR.

81st min.: Good ball by Mbappe to Icardi, but he can't trouble Rennes.

75th min.: SUBS - Three subs on both sides. PSG brings on Icardi, Wijnaldum and Ander Herrera for Neymar, Verratti and Gueye. Rennes bring on Guirassy, Santamaria and Assignon for Terrier, Martin and Bourigeaud.

74th min.: Another free kick from a Messi distance and he barely misses the target on a left-footed shot.

70th min.: It's the Mbappe show. He runs onto another through ball into space and his shot barely misses the top left corner. Good defending by Nayef Aguerd who threw him slightly off balance.

Nayef Aguerd

68th min.: And Mbappe did do it by himself! He combines with Messi and Di Maria on a sweeping run toward goal and his finish in the box is unbelievably accurate. But the officials have scratched this one for offside on the initial pass near midfield.

65th min.: Kylian Mbappe already looking desperate. He fires two hopeful shots. In the first half he was combining with his teammates. Now he's trying to reduce the deficit by himself.

62nd min.: The Ghanaian winger Kamaldeen Sulemana fires a shot with his right foot and misses the far right corner of the goal. He's on his game today. A constant threat.

61st min.: It's been a timid response from PSG and it actually feels like Rennes are more likely to score a third. Martin Terrier barely misses connecting on a beautiful, low cross from Sulemana. Rennes commanding the wide areas.

55th min.: Three yellow cards in a matter of a minute. It's Jonas Martin (Rennes), Presnel Kimpembe (PSG) and Gigi Donnarumma (PSG) who all get cautioned, the latter two for protests. Martin rammed into the back of a PSG player on a header challenge. It looked innocent enough.

52nd min.: The crowd wants a penalty kick call for the home side. No call from the ref. Rennes are going to enjoy operating on the counterattack. And the fans are still bouncing up and down after that second goal.

49th min.: This is the first two-goal deficit that PSG is facing this season. We'll see if the stars can bring them back.

46th min.: What a start to the second half! Goal by Rennes! Flavien Tait unmarked in the box to finish off a cross by Gaetan Laborde. PSG were asleep to start the second half. Roazhon Park is rocking.

Halftime: Rennes 1, PSG 0

Halftime: After a tricky start, PSG eventually got a grip on the game and created a series of chances. Messi was pulling the strings and was arguably the most influential he's been while with PSG. But finishing struggles from Mbappe and Neymar, and some good goalkeeping from Alfred Gomis meant PSG failed to take advantage. That allowed the best two Rennes attacking players to combine for the opening goal just before the halftime whistle.

45th min.: Rennes goal! Sulemana with the cross from the left side and Gaetan Laborde crashes the far post and finishes with the first-time volley. Rennes take the lead against the run of play.

44th min.: Great goalkeeping by Alfred Gomis, who stops an Angel Di Maria cross in the box that was destined for a PSG teammate. Gomis has been the standout for Rennes along with Sulemana.

41st min.: Rennes winger Sulemana is a one-man wrecking crew and his latest run leads to a corner kick. Rennes take their time with this corner after a period of domination from PSG. The corner kick amounts to nothing.

38th min.: Mbappe can't complain he's not getting passes today. This time it's Neymar with the pass into Mbappe, but Rennes 'keeper Gomis comes off his line to claim the ball.

36th min.: Rennes is having a hard time containing Messi, who's finding pockets and making darting runs. Messi combines again with Mbappe and Rennes 'keeper Alfred Gomis comes out to snuff out the chance.

33rd min.: Messi to Mbappe again! He feeds the forward, who rounds the 'keeper, loses the angle, and then puts the ball back in the middle for Messi. But the ball is cleared by Rennes. Those two are finding each other today.

31st min.: Messi crossbar! He wins a free kick 25 yards out and curls the ball over the wall and off the face of the bar, and it bounces away from goal.

27th min.: PSG is feeling it. Now long-distance goal specialist Idrissa Gueye with a shot from outside that barely misses the left post. Good moment for PSG.

25th min.: Messi to Mbappe and nearly a goal! Messi sends Mbappe through on goal, but the French forward skies it. Incredible miss.

24th min.: First yellow of the match shown to Rennes forward Gaetan Laborde for a stray arm in the face of a PSG defender.

23rd min.: Neymar with a shot inside the box! The ball takes a fortunate bounce in the box and falls to Neymar who badly misses the target. Here's a positive Neymar play from earlier in the game:

21st min.: Sulemana is now on the right wing and he fires a left-footed shot that barely misses the top corner of Donnarumma's goal. Great chance.

18th min.: End-to-end action. Rennes midfielder Jonas Martin with a shot that misses the target, then PSG's Achraf Hakimi appears in the Rennes box and then we're back down on the other end for a Rennes corner. Entertaining match.

15th min.: Rennes is getting to the PSG back line with some ease. This is going to be an open game. A stat to keep in mind: Rennes coach Bruno Genesio has lost only one of five home matches against PSG:

11th min.: PSG 'keeper Donnarumma with some words for Rennes forward Martin Terrier, who challenged for a ball which Donnarumma won. But the Italian 'keeper took a knock to the head in the process and didn't like it.

10th min.: Rennes left winger Kamaldeen Sulemana is getting on the ball a lot and he looks to be the major source of danger. He started a play which finished with a shot by Gaetan Laborde which was right at Donnarumma.

6th min.: Quick turn and burst of acceleration by Kylian Mbappe and it's Rennes center back Nayef Aguerd who challenges and cuts off his run in the box. Great defensive play.

2nd min.: PSG's Marquinhos clears an early Rennes corner and a Flavien Tait cross is gobbled up by PSG 'keeper Gigi Donnarumma.

1st min.: Kylian Mbappe kicks off the match and Rennes come out pressing. The crowd is immediately into it.

6:52 a.m.: There will be a minute of applause before kickoff in memory of former Marseille owner Bernard Tapie, who passed away on Sunday.

6:44 a.m.: Messi getting the friendly reception from the home fans:

6:00 a.m.: The league leaders kick off Ligue 1's seven-game Sunday slate.
