MANISTEE—A disk golf course at Lighthouse park was unanimously approved at Tuesday's Manistee City Council meeting. The total cost of the project is budgeted at $60,115, with $34,565 of in-kind services.

Those in-kind services would be performed by the Manistee Department of Public Works with a $3,050 cash match and $22,500 in grant proceeds.

DPW Director Jeff Mikula, also said the DPW is putting some money down for the project, so it wouldn't just be the council, and volunteers funding the project. That being said, Mayor Lynda Beaton said she struggled with how to vote on the project.

"I think it's a great project for us. I always struggle with these kinds of decisions on how to vote on something like this, because I know that this will, serve a few more than the general population. So it's, I have in my head I have to evaluate, you know the time value we get back.

"So I've been going back and forth in my mind all morning so or all day, I should say on which way to vote on this," Beaton said.

That being said, Beaton joined with the rest of the council to unanimously approve the project.

Also at the meeting was the consideration of approval of a crane truck for the sewage department, updating information with the army to keep a Civil War-era cannon currently on display at Veterans Memorial Park, and the appointment of people to vacant positions on boards and commissions, as well as a presentation to council by the Manistee City Parks Commission.

Most of the items on the agenda were relatively routine, and were approved unanimously and received little discussion.

However, fourth district council member Jermaine Sullivan did have several questions in regards to the purchase of the crane truck. Sullivan asked why many of the city trucks have had to be replaced, as during the past few council meetings there have been requests for new municipal equipment, particular trucks and heavy machinery.

Mikula noted that there have been many equipment failures, and the DPW has been trying to stretch out the life of some of the trucks, even after they've been scheduled to be replaced and that sometimes the trucks fail before they were able to get the new equipment. For example, the current crane truck the DPW is asking to replace is over 20 years old.

According to the agenda for the meeting, "The current truck #130 is a 2000 GMC K3500 and is scheduled for replacement. A quote was solicited from Gorno Ford through their MiDeals contract #071B7700181 for a cab and chassis, service body, and crane. The cab and chassis and service body will be paid from the Motor Pool Fund and the crane will be paid for out of the sewer operating budget."

DPW was asking for a 2022 Ford F-450, CM-CB 9-foot service body, and EC-3200 Stellar crane sewer department crane truck that would cost $82,543.00 from Gorno Ford.

Mikula also noted that the old model was from 2000 and that the truck was bought before either of his two sons were born, and they're both in college now.
