A monster win for both the Kansas football and baseball programs on Friday with Lawrence (Kan.) High running back Devin Neal announcing his pledge to the Jayhawks.
Neal is perhaps the most coveted prospect this cycle for football coach Les Miles and his staff as they beat Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas State and Oklahoma State for the 5-foot-11, 192-pound talent's pledge. Neal also took part in Kansas's virtual junior day this week.
"With my recruitment it was 50/50 with baseball and football," Neal told 247Sports. "I had to find the right fit for me! My family and friends are here as well. It was just all around perfect."
Neal is commit No. 5 for the Jayhawks in the 2021 class joining Carrollton (Texas) Hebron receiver Jaddai Henry, Lancaster (Texas) High receiver Majik Rector, Grand Prairie (Texas) South Grand Prairie receiver Kelan Robinson and Brownsburg (Ind.) High quarterback Ben Easters.
When you turn on the film it's easy to see why he's so coveted. A big-play waiting to happen, Neal is a physical, shifty, every-down back, with good vision that explodes into his top-end gear and can do everything out of the backfield. From the after-contact ability, the balance, the hips and of course the speed, he seems to have the full repertoire. In 10 games as a junior he rushed for 1,687 yards and 26 touchdowns with another 523 yards receiving and six more scores.
These are the recruiting battles Miles and company have to win if they're going to turn this program around, beginning with keeping the most talented prospects home. Neal’s high school is exactly 1.5 miles from Memorial Stadium.
"The football and baseball program are both heading to the top," Neal said. "Picking up recruits! I just love what they’ve been about from the get go. They believed in me first and I’m ready to take off with them."
The 247Sports Composite tabs the 5-foot-11, 188-pound Neal as the No. 51 running back in the country and No. 3 overall prospect in the state of Kansas.
Neal took to social media to announce his decision.
"I want to thank God for blessing me with the opportunity to play both of my loves at the next level," Neal wrote on Twitter. "The journey was not easy but with God and family I prevailed. I want to thank my family for constantly supporting me through it all. You have always stood by me and have showed me that true value of family in life. I also want to thank my teammates and friends for pushing me to be great and giving me constant laughs and comfort throughout my journey. To my current and former coaches there are not enough words to say thank you. I never felt like I had to choose between the three sports and you believed in me knowing how challenging it would be. You taught so much and you never let me have my way or coast through anything and for that I'm forever grateful for the lifelong lessons and bonds. Last but not least, I want to thank all of the schools and coaches who recruited me. I truly appreciate the devoted time and the relationships I've built with you all. With that being said, I'm excited and humbled to announce I will be continuing my journey as a football and baseball student-athlete at the University of Kansas!"
