ANAHEIM, Calif. — Yankees manager Aaron Boone has repeatedly preached keeping a level head throughout the team’s maddeningly inconsistent season.

On Tuesday night, that’s the approach his players took following a 6-4 loss to the Angels that gave the Yankees their fourth consecutive defeat.

The stunning losing streak comes on the heels of the Yankees’ best stretch in 50 years, winning 13 straight games. It’s dropped them from four games behind the first-place Rays to eight games. Their lead for the top spot in the AL Wild Card Game slipped from three games to two.

“I think we just stay the course,” first baseman Anthony Rizzo said. “It’s never easy coming out West, especially this late in the year. I think we’re continuing to have good team at-bats. Our pitching has been pretty solid. We just haven’t scored enough runs. I think we just stay the course and continue to build a belief that we’re not out of any game. This goes to show that every game we’re still playing until the end.”

The Yankees’ losing streak began with a loss Saturday at Oakland. It continued with another loss to the A’s, and then the Yankees dropped two straight to the lowly Angels, who are without Mike Trout. Shohei Ohtani also won’t pitch against them this series due to getting his on the right wrist by a pitch over the weekend.

“We’ve had to bounce back from a lot this year,” said starting pitcher Jameson Taillon, who got shelled for six runs Tuesday. “I can tell you winning is a lot more fun than losing. The vibe in the clubhouse is a lot more fun after we win. No one’s excited, but at the same time, we have the opportunity to come out here and at least salvage a game with Gerrit (Cole) on the mound (Wednesday) before we head back to New. York.”

Said Boone, “We lost some razor thin games. (Tuesday) was a story of five double plays. Obviously, really hurt us. I thought we were having a lot of really good at-bats all night. It was a game we feel like we probably should have broken open.”

Center fielder Brett Gardner said he’d rather not see it as a four-game losing streak.

“It’s a tough game, as we know,” he said. “Even though we’ve lost four in a row, we’ve won 13 of our last 17. That’s how I choose to look at it.”
