After an undefeated national championship season in 2020, No 1. Alabama opened its 2021 campaign with a dominant 44-13 win over No. 14 Miami on Saturday in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game in Atlanta.
Quarterback Bryce Young made a record-setting debut as the Crimson Tide's starter. He became the first quarterback in program history to throw four passing touchdowns in his first start. He threw three of them in the first half against a veteran Miami defense. Young exited the game in the final minutes after going 27 for 38 for 344 yards, the four touchdowns and zero interceptions.
"Congratulations to Alabama," Hurricanes coach Manny Diaz said following the game. "They played an outstanding game, but the difference in the game was third-down offense. Their quarterback made some plays keeping plays alive outside the pocket that extended drives and kept our offense off the field." Alabama was 10 for 16 on third down.
Miami put together a 60-yard drive at the end of the second quarter and a 74-yard drive at the start of the third but netted just two field goals.
Hurricanes quarterback D'Eriq King finished 23 for 30 for 179 yards with a touchdown, two interceptions and four sacks. The scoring pass was a 29-yarder down the sideline to Xavier Restrepo for Restrepo's first career touchdown. Alabama linebackers Will Anderson and Henry To’o spent a considerable amount of energy chasing King around the field.
The Tide's win did come at a cost, though. Starting linebacker Chris Allen was carted off the field after a sack/fumble that Alabama recovered before halftime, and To’o left the game with an apparent elbow injury.
In the end, though, the Crimson Tide easily improved their record in neutral-site openers under Nick Saban to 11-0.
